Hi everyone!

My name is Karen, and I live in Fredericksburg, VA. I am new to the hobby, or as I can see from my reading, obsession of saltwater aquariums! I have been "lurking" for a few days already, reading and trying to absorb information a little at a time. I do not even have a tank yet... Taking this nice and slow. My desire and plan is for a seahorse tank. I have always wanted and loved seahorses, and I feel I am in a place in my life now that will allow me to put in the needed time and dedication to it. I have been securing as many on-line resources as I can, and read a little every day. As stated above, I have not even bought the tank yet, though I think I have about come to the decision of the size I want to start with.

Everyone here seems to be friendly and helpful, and I look forward to hearing from you and learning more. I have many questions... Some as simple as, "What is the red stuff growing in the pet store saltwater tanks?" (assume it's NOT something I want in my future tank!). I hope to be able to find people in my area too, as nearby resources. I have driven as far as Richmond to check out a reef store, and I have assessed the local Petcos and PetSmarts for availability of supplies. I have not ventured in to Northern Virginia or DC yet, so any suggestions on resources in that area will be appreciated. I plan on buying the tank in Sept.-Oct... and work on getting it set up through the Fall/Winter. Again, no hurrying here! I don't want to invest time and money, and then be seriously devastated by complete failure. It seems that most people here are excited by watching and helping with tank builds, etc., so I will try to post my journey. Please assist me by suggesting threads, people, and other resources! Is there a forum section for the geographical areas as well... i.e. Mid-Atlantic, or Northern Virginia/Washington DC/Maryland, etc?

Thank you for adding me to the community! I look forward to "meeting" you!
Have a blessed day!
Karen

welcome to r2r karen your off to a great start already your doing your research before buying. in this hobby dont cut corners on equipment and take it slow and youll be fine

Hi Karen and welcome to R2R! :welcome: Fredricksburg is not too far from where we live (Chesterfield, just south of Richmond). There are several folks from our local club that are members here. You may want to reach out to TammyLiz as she also lives in your area and we are sure she would be happy to hear from you.

You are very wise to do your homework and take it slow. Patience is one of the hardest lessons in this hobby. We wish you much success and are looking forward to seeing your Seahorse tank come to fruition.

Welcome! Hope you can find the help you need here. Btw- the red stuff in the tanks is probably cyano bacteria. :)

Hi there Karen!! Welcome to R2R and the hobby!! Feel free to ask away!! Lookin' forward to your build thread!! Good luck and happy reefing!!

Hello Karen and welcome to R2R. I too love seahorses but have never been able/willing to dedicate a tank just to them as there are so many things that tug at me. Great luck with your venture and be sure to post pics. Consider purchasing bread seahorses as opposed to wild caught as they are hardier. Good luck again.

Hey Karen,
If you are looking for a Reef group in the DC area check out WAMAS Homepage . Great group of folks stretching from MD down to the Richmond area. If you are interested in taking a trip up north make sure to stop in at Blue Ribbon Koi Blue Ribbon Koi & Marine which was my favorite shop when I was still had a tank.

Good luck and welcome to R2R.

Welcome to R2R Karen. I am currently raising and breeding dwarf seahorses and will soon be doing the same with other varieties of seahorses. There are a few people on here that know a bit about them and would be more than happy to help, myself included. Love the fact that you are researching before you are making any purchases. Please feel free to ask questions and if I don't have an answer I will try and point you in the right direction!!!

Thanks to all for the greetings!
Missy, I have been following your posts on the dwarf babies since the beginning!
Great job!
I will certainly seek you out when things really move forward for me!

Thanks again and have a blessed day!
Karen
