Help choosing Reef friendly Eel

Golden drarf gets 12" tops. Perfect for tanks down to about 30g. I kept mine in a 10g for a month with a tight lid. He was happy as can be with his caves. Caves are important! Also rocks must be secure and on the glass and it sand. They dig under the rocks and can make them unstable if they are just on sand.

Snowflake will be borderline... they get twice as big. I wouldnt put anything else in a 75...

It's one of these reptile lids.... I picked it up out of walmart. A golden dwarf wouldn't be able to push it up but a bigger eel could. I also wouldn't put a bigger eel in a 10g for any amount of time, and only a GDM for a month before moving to a 30g. Baby snowflakes that are less than 12" would be ok temporary like the GDM. A few weights on the corners would work for stronger eels in larger tanks. I've found with proper caves and feeding, eels pretty much stay put.

I agree. I have one in my 125 sps reef. Hasn't harmed a fly.... or anything else. Lol

You could get one of those screen tops from BRS, and find a way to fasten it to the rim, or weigh it down. I just got that metal screen because it was cheap and right there.

I’m just thinking of two potential problems, one the line connected to my pump, also the inlet for my future locline

For any eel a lid is needed.

Zebra for sure. Doesn't eat your fish. Doesn't spend all night finding a way to jump out and die. I don't even have a screen or lid on my tank anymore. Looks really cool. Beats my experience with snowflakes.

Talk to your LFS, they should be able to order them for you... may take a bit to get one though.

Dwarf Golden Moray +1. Mine did nuke my Peppermint Shrimp population, but other than that, it doesn't bother anyone. Usually eats every other day or so, but is out swimming quite a bit a hour or two before lights out.

I think they may be pretty hard to find in the near future due to the recent legislature in Hawaii regarding Ornamental Fish Collection.

I have a 36” Ribbon Eel and I would say it is NOT reef safe. I thought about putting in my 200 Full reef because I was told they are safe. I decided to not chance it so I put in a swim tank with a Moorish Idol and Gold Angel. I recently got 3 smaller Pink Skunk clowns and I keep the eel very well fed like 3 times a week. Within 30 seconds of adding the first clown it swam by the ribbon and in its mouth it went. He has eaten 3 smaller fish in one month so yeah I would say Def not reef safe. He is fine with my larger Fish and eats anything I put in a stick but otherwise I would not label as reef safe.
