I need to know what else do I need to do (if anything)? How long do I dose metro in my QT if the tank if the tank is already high dosed with CP? Can I cure my QT complete of Uronema with metro/cp in the water without break down and sterilizing it as I have no where else to go with my chromis in QT? When They finish my 30 day QT treatment, are they good to go in the display as usual?

Now my story.....

So I got my first set of chromis (5) in my QT last week. At first things were great. Everyone was doing well, eating baby brine shrimp, swimming actively. I started my usual prazi followed by CP on Wednesday. Friday, one fish started to isolate itself a little and was breathing a little heavier. I woke Saturday, eager to check on him, and he was dead on the bottom and one of his tank mates had classic Uronema redness.

I quickly upped my dose of CP from
the usual 40mg/gallon to 80mg per Humblefish previous posts. He got a quick FW dip, and tank was also dosed with general cure (it’s the only metronidazole) I have.

I do not have the space or option to have a new sterlized QT available for me so he has gone back into the same QT tank.

Today was his second FW dip and tank dose of metro. Everyone including sick guys seems to be doing good. Everyone but him is aggressively eating. He has lost some scales but his infected areas are looking better and his is way more active than previous 2 days.

Thoughts?

If you are dosing CP @ 80mg/gal, that should clear uronema in a day or so.

Dosing metro on top of that would just be added insurance. (I.E. The purity of the CP being used is questionable.)

Metro alone did not work for me on the 5 chromis I now have in QT. I am now close to the end of treatment and have only 3 left. I am sitting on the same question you have. Do I dare release them into DT?

Maybe even the PhD's here on the forum cant answer that one.

It might have to do with the purity of the metronidazole you are using. Pharmaceutical grade (99%) is always ideal, and most of the meds I have purchased from this source have been >90% pure: https://www.fishchemical.com/FULL-PRODUCT-LIST-METRONIDAZOLE--22989.Item.html

Seachem Metroplex, on the other hand, freely admits that their metro is only 70% pure: https://www.seachem.com/metroplex.php

The other 30% are "excipients" which may or may not be safe to overdose in order to compensate for the 70% purity. So, I always defer to the mfg's dosing instructions unless I know the person I am helping is using a "close to" pharmaceutical grade medication.

CP quality is good (Diamond Back Drugs. My cousin's my vet so he was happy to help!)

@Humblefish How long should I keep the CP at 80mg/gallon, 14 days? How long to treat with metro in the water, 14 days also? I have Focus and Metroplex in the mail, 14 days in the food as well?

Thanks! Youre previous posts are gold! Thanks a ton for your work and knowledge. It helps us newer reefers tackle these hurdles that other wise would see insurmountable!

If using just 1 QT, treat with CP for 30 days and metro for 14 days. Also food soak Focus + Metroplex for 14 continuous days. These medications can all be combined.

"Excipients" E - X - C - I - P - I - E - N - T - S "Excipients"

Now that's a word I am sending over to Scripps for their annual competition. There has got to be a nerd somewhere who knows the spelling on that one.

To add to the already EXCELLENT advice this thread has received:

Uronema is a very virulent parasite. It often causes enough damage that by the time symptoms arise treatment is too late. It's unfortunate, but it happens. However if you aren't using pharmaceutical grade CP it's possible that it's a combination of both a medication and parasite issue.
