Hi guys,
I grabbed a coral from a buyer last night and he gave me this as well but I don’t know what it is or if I have it on the right side and don’t want it to die. Anyone know what this is and how to care for it? Thanks as always.

It’s hard and almost looks like half an oyster or something. The other side is hard and red. Assuming this side is up because it seems the only side that shows anything living. But again I’m clueless and need some advise. ThNks.

Show up pictures of both sides and in white lights. May help a lot. Could be a pavona to a monti to a shell.

Looks upside down actually.

Looks like its dying? Is that white skeleton on the edges?

Looks like monti. Likes to be on the rocks in high flow and high light. The red side is the flesh part, while the white is its skeleton.

Here’s a better picture right side up and with white light. Any advise on caring for a montepora?
How mature is the tank?
They are one of the easier sps but still an sps.
High light, high flow. Very long sweepers and grows like Xenia (fast), so watch your other corals/keep it away. Not sure if they need any special feedings (I don’t think so).

That was my very first sps ever. If you can handle that, you can move up to a birds nest - pocillopora. That's as far as I have gotten. I kept mine around 10 nitrates, I really don't recall my phosphates but they were under .1 with help of macro algae. They do love a lot of light. But 150+ par works well. You can start it off low.
If you don't have a par meter, what corals do you keep currently? And a full tank shot can help with ideal placement to start.

For corals just this, a small frog spawn and small torch. That’s it.

Fairly easy sps, but as stated, still demanding. Also stated, it needs good light and flow. Not direct flow. The two lps you have will have longer tentacles, so keep them a good distance away. Monti's do not have sweepers, but yes, chalices do and they can be long and deadly.

Good luck. Those plating are usually pretty easy to grow out.
