Okay so i had gotten a used reverse osmosis system last year an since i do not have a reef tank i never set it up. Since i plan on setting a tank up soon i decided to install it today. Got everything up and running but i have one question that is haunting me. How do you know which outlet is for the clean water and which is for the waste? My system is not marked and i cannot find any info on it online. I am guessing the side which has the most flow which is how i have it connected now. Is there any other way of knowing for sure? Im going to order a test kit anyway so i guess thats one way of knowing. Anyone know a good test kit?

With my portable unit the side with the most flow is the dirty water. There is a lot of waste water that comes with making clean water.

Take a look at the drawing here:

Pay special attention to the placement of the hoses on the RO membrane housing, one outlet is closer to the centerline of the housing and the other is closer to the outside edge. Better RO vendors color code all their lines so you know which is which.

If the system was used previously and the membrane has been allowed to dry out it will more than likely need to be replaced, membrane must always stay wetted once in use and they should be used at least every 10-14 days to keep them fresh and functional. If it is a RO/DI the DI is certainly shot as under perfect conditions resin lasts 6 months when stored in a vacuum sealed bag in a cool dark place.

The waste flow should be four times the treated flow or a 4:1 wast ratio. You can confirm this with a watch or clock and a measuring cup for exactly one minute from each. You will need a TDS meter to know the condition of the RO membrane and DI filter and the sediment anc carbon filters get replaced every 6 months like clockwork regardless of heavy or light usage. TDS does not tell you the condition of these two.
