Help with Tangs please

Sounds to me like you had hair algae and the fish store said oh get a tang it will take care of the GHA for you. Then sold you two tangs to help combat that problem. Not good bad lfs.

This is a tough but extremely rewarding hobby that never stops challenging you. You learn so much about so many things, so just take it slow and steady. I lost my first fish for an extremely stupid reason too and I still feel bad about it years later. But the point is that you care enough to not make the same mistake twice and that’s the important part.

yeah sorry for your losses but I always go by the adult size of the fish and compatability of everyone
just bc a fish store crams a lot of fish together doesn't mean it's correct or should be done long term and don't let anyone talk you into a fish bc it's cool
I'm not trying to be mean but make informed decisions before you buy and make sure you can provide what they need
I've made mistakes esp when I first started out but there's a lot of info now and lots of people to ask questions before you buy
lol there was no internet when I started this hobby

Confined space definitely an issue . Whst is tank temperature and salinity?
Age of tank and ammonia levels?
Seems like ammonia buildup quickly in a small space with rapid stocking of fish with possible ammonia increase.if temperature is above 78 degrees, oxygen level will decrease also affecting salinity readings

In the first pics it looks like you put tiles in the tank? If so did you use cement to join them? Either way the cement will raise the kh and gh continuously. If you have tiles in the tank they need to he removed because they may release heavy metals which nems dont like. And some fish too, like tangs.

Id reccomened getting a refractometer to test salt accurately and a salifert alkalinity test. Both your most valuable pieces of equipment. Also for ammonia issues add some macroalgae (saltwater plants) they will help remove any ammonia. Stay away from caulerpa species they will take over the tank. Chaeto is okay. I like ulva sea lettuce personally. Good luck.

Also sry to hear of your troubles.... Sounds like you’ve received some good advice, best imo is patience. I am new also and currently have a hippo 3 inches and flame in 20 gal quarantine for the last 2 weeks. They seem to have made friends, but concerned today as my hippo has started flashing against rocks after feeding today!... they continue to eat everything offered , should I just observe for a few days?... FYI my display has been up 3 months with 2 clowns , a couple acans and 2 leathers and doing well.... was thinking if adding these new peeps this weekend but now concerned about tang... Advice much appreciated, many thanks

Did the freshwater dip show anything? I had wanted a powder blue tang, and after seeing a large one at petco for a good price, jumped at it, and without quarantine, added it to my 125g. Scratched a little, but seemed fine for the first couple of days, but on the third day I noticed rapid breathing and sluggish movement, and started noticing tiny translucent worm-like spots on its eyes. Turned out to be flukes. During the last few hours, the tang looked a lot like yours, laying on its side, so unresponsive that I could pick the poor thing up with my hand. Prazi-pro took care of the tank with several treatments, minus losing the beautiful tang and a flame angel. It may be unrelated to your case, but worth a check, because if it is a parasite you’ll need to treat the tank. Good luck!
