Today I just noticed a few tiny heads of what I'm guessing are zoas on a frag base of a candy cane coral I received a week ago. I did not remove this coral from the frag because I was afraid to mess with it too much. I know the zoa toxic discussion has been beaten to death in this forum but I can't help but be turned off by them. My intention was to avoid them. These seemed to have JUST opened up on the back. I think there are 3 in total, the largest is about 1/4 inch in diameter.

Pictured with blue lights on and off. They look pretty dull with white light only. My guess is Eagle Eye or Red Ring zoa from research. I see green tentacles with a reddish center and a purple center. I'm tempted to remove the candy cane skeleton from the plug and discard it.

The real question..am I a goner??

Not all Zoanthids are toxic. I can't tell what that is from the picture. Candy canes are very hardy. Put on some gloves if you are concerned or just wash really well afterwards. I'd carefully remove the frag from the plug and throw it out. I have also used a sharp blade to scrape off unwanted hitchhikers. Depending on what it is, it might now kill it though. Choice is yours. You shouldn't have to have anything in your tank that you don't want but realistically, it's going to happen. Consider a quarantine tank for new additions. It's a pain in the butt but it might save you from a headache later.
Also, I have had a bunch of different kinds of Zoas, I am careful with touching them but I have never had an issue. They are beautiful!! Just a thought!
