So I plan on running a 65gallon tall soon. I use to run a 4ft 60g with a protein skimmer and a Aquaclear 70. Was wondering if a skimmer is enough if I get one rated for about 250g. Or should I run a Aquaclear 110 and fill it with a sponge and bio balls or something?

If you have enough rock and flow in your tank, that with a skimmer many have had success with just that set up. The hob filter would be useful to house additional bio media and chemical media. Is you have enough rock you would not need to additional bio media in a hob, and using chemical filtration arguably to some, is not necessary.

That's not how I would do it, I would use an hob filter. I also like using the mechanical filtration of a filter pad to keep the water polished.
