How many tangs

Why not? They get along all the time.

I have a purple, yellow, and desjardini sailfin together... also present in the same tank is a Powder blue and Achilles.. The achilles does bully the powder blue but they get along. My last pair of them did not mind eachother at all.

I will say, i added the three zebrasoma together.... except the sailfin my past one I sold to make room - my wife got mad - i bought another one. The new one did get harassed by the purple tang (who became the new tank boss when I got rid of the old desjardini sailfin) for a few days. They get along great now and no real damage occurred. I would recommend adding them at the same time for best results.

I might also add that zebrasoma are good tangs for a 125. Yes, the sailfins will outgrow it but it takes awhile, unlike Hippos, Nasos, unicorns, etc. that can grow like weeds. I have one tang in my 125 and it's a 4-5" Blonde Naso. I am well aware that in a couple years he will need sold/moved. Good news is, I upgrade one of my three tanks every year or two so my next upgrade will be an 8' tank!

(I have two 180 gallons, and a 125 gallon currently)

I'm currently in the market to get some tangs in my 180g. What is everyone's suggestion on the kinds and how many? Not really wanting an Achilles based on the difficulty

Purple tangs are always my first choice. They aren't very aggressive and are pretty hardy IME. Then I would say powder blue/brown, but only if you QT because of ich. Chevrons are also nice. And IMO, tominis and convict tangs are extremely ignored, even they are both beautiful fish. Any of those would be good, just don't mix 2 from the same genus.

ive got a 220 with 3 yellow tangs, 1 big hippo, mated pair of gold stripe maroon clowns, adult queen angel and a juvenile emperor angel.... just my .02c everyone gets along and is happy... key for me was to keep everything fat and fed. oh also my system is a mixed reef.

Purple are quite aggressive...

Oh wasn't sure but that's good

We have a yellow and a mimic mid-size in our 120. They get along great! We had a larger sailfin also but she was bigger and picked on the other two tangs so we sold her. My girlfriend keeps begging me to get another tang (like a naso or a blue) Maybe a tomini...but she says they don't have as much personality.

Try a Kole, they are beautiful and have tons of personality!

I have a purple and a spotted yellow eye Kole tang in my 75g Sps tank, The purple is my only "Big" fish and it's fat and healthy. With a 6' 125 I think you could possibly fit 3 happily but at least 2 of the 3 should be one of the smaller species, also no tangs that are going to get 1'+ imo...

Truth be told I probably wouldn't have a purple in my tank but I live in a small state and there's only a handful a larger reefs, but there's a ton of people setting up small reefs and sticking larger tangs in them because of PET CO!! So these fish end up needing a home or dieing a slow painful death. I took in the tang thinking I'd nurse it back to health and move it on to a larger tank if I could but it's doing so good I'm keeping it for the time being.

If you look on reef builders they keep 5 or more tangs in their coral tanks that look to be around 300 gallons
