I'm setting up a frag tank run off my main display. There will be two pumps in the sump of the DT. I recently installed a Vectra M1 for the DT, replacing a Mag 7. I am contemplating using the Mag 7, which is old and had lost some power, to pump to my new frag tank, which is a 20 long. There will be about 4 feet or so of tubing, traveling 3 feet up (diagonally). I'm trying to figure out what overflow box I need also. So will that Mag 7 just be way too much?

Since you have it, maybe it will make sense to use.

But it might make sense to sell it and replace it with a right-sized pump that only costs $20 and uses 1/6th the amount of power.

Why not use just the Vectra and build a simple manifold on your main return line with a half-inch line to your Frag tank. The Vectra would certainly have enough power and the half-inch line wouldn't rob too much flow from the main display.

Plus, the Mag 7 probably runs much warmer than the Vectra, so you could eliminate the extra heat as well.
