Hi love your tank. My tank is about 15 gallons the dimensions are 24x12x12 inches I use two small fluval 30 filters and a small power head that has adjustable flow and an adjustable led light that has modes that simulate sunrise and sunset I use no media of any type in my system the only thing that is in my filters is small ceramic tubes I change out 2 gallons of water weekly and I like to feed the tank pe mysis frozen shrimp and all seem to be well see photo

I consider my setup to be pretty simple. I have a IM40 AIO and run filter floss, chemi pure, and purigen for filtration. Have AI primes and Nero pump, ATO, and heater and that’s it. Will likely grab an Apex at some point as we take a few trips each year. Felt fortunate to have everything survive 2 different vacations since the tank was set up.

To me a canister is an unnecessary piece of equip for sw or fw. So are filter socks for that matter.

Most of us have the same equip, but its just at different price points. It just depends on your setup & your livestock. Your tank works with what you have. If you unhooked my equip & tried your equip youd fail miserable. Water would be yellow, nitrates through the roof, & turf algae everywhere.

29 gallon tank, 20 gallon sump.

LED strip light, 2 T5 bulbs

Two circulating pumps.

Sump has chaeto area, skimmer, one heater and return pump.....I do have a mini reactor for carbon....was using it for GFO briefly.

ATO in basement...but I have made several gravity feed ATO's for simplicity back in the day.

Dosing pump in basement for kalk additions.

My controllers are ranco for the heater and light timers or float switches for everything else.

I used to manually drip kalk and also tried 2 part many years ago, but running a doser is a wonderful addition.

My 60 is base, base, base. No coral yet though. Its a newer tank, not sure what I want to do with it yet.

60 not drilled. HOB overflow, wet dry filter, heater, Jebao sow8, rio return and 2 AI hd52 from my 180.

Mine is very simple.. it literally runs itself..
The apex does everything;
Feeding, fresh water top off, turns lights on and off, sends me a text to clean the skimmer cup, automatically refills the ato and salt mixing station as well as weekly 10% water changes lol

That to me is simplicity.

Now to answer the second part of your question: “do you need that much stuff?” LMAOOOO OF COURSE NOT!! but that’s how I keep my tank “simple”

great to see so many simple set ups yours looks great mine is still quite young it’s a good thread for newbs to read and to see that they don’t need all this expensive gadgetry that can be scary when first starting out

Been up for 6 yrs. Just upgraded to 90 from a 75.
Skimmer was 252 (can find used around 100-150)
Fluval light 220 if going t5 not needed. since already had used it. Nice for ramp up and down and all blue. Also provides some shimmer
Hydro planet T5 104 bulbs another 100 (all bulbs must be changed out unless you want all rocks to look like trolls with green hair)
Fx4 Filter 199 on sale.
Eflux wave pump 150. Mid range can find cheaper models
Shop around and price match. Amazon is not always the cheapest.

With that said, simplicity is undefined. Yes you can run a very simple system and still have a beautiful tank. Both simple gadgets or fancy toys has its purpose, that is to reduce manual work. However, certain reefing required necessary gadget to maintain thus cannot maintain with simplicity. Modern reefing tech are pushing boundaries in reefing either to mimic the environment where our inhabitants come from. or make life easier for hobbyist so they dont become a slave to the tank.

How simple is my system? I would say fairly simple but trying to explain anything about it to my wife if a problem arises when I’m out of town is like trying to explain quantum mechanics to geese.

Joking aside I would say that it’s subjective. For example dosing pumps, automated water changes etc aren’t necessarily complicated.
