When I was conscientious about keeping things trimmed and spaced

48379478406_715a027a4e_c.jpg

The corals I suggested to eliminate I haven't kept in 15+ years. They are space eaters taking up real estate for more beautiful acro species I'd rather have that don't take constant trimming.
Around here it's hard to sell surplus of those type at local swaps as they are everywhere and go for $5-10 a frag.

I probably have 70+ acropora so my tanks are cluttered messes right now. My problem is adding new corals..............we have a wide variety of 100+ acros to choose from.

For a display I prefer one with equal negative space vs packed walls.

It's your tank, so if you like those corals that's up to you..............I prefer other acros to use that space.
Nice species.

Indeed some of these grow a little slower.
I may consider introducing a few of those when i can free up some space in the future.
For now i have a love/hate relation with the current population.

Very nice [emoji106]

you say "]When I was conscientious about keeping things trimmed and spaced"

How long did it take for that to become "overcrowded"?

Some corals are more difficult to get rid of than other. That don't make them less actractive or beautifull and certainly no reason for me to ban then.

It's hard to say as I trim some corals more than others based on growth and others are trimmed due to requests from reefers and my own sales of frags.

The Paletta colony in the back was split in half after 3 years and grew to what you see in that picture. That is one of my faster growers. The corals I suggested to get rid of grow 4 times faster. Monti caps are in a fast grow league of their own.......huge space & flow eaters and the there just isn't a beauty trade off in my mind.

All my corals are mounted to be mobile and are in sections so I can pull and trim as I see fit.

It's all a matter of perspective.........I don't see beauty in those corals........I see nuisance. I consider digitatas, stylos, montis pocci, & certain fast growing acropora weeds due to fast growth and overcrowding..........they can over whelm tanks. I've seen tanks dominated by those species and no room for much prettier acroporas.

We are also different in that I don't like the wall of corals look..................I prefer more negative space (no corals) for a more impactful perspective.

You asked for a solution I gave you one that I prefer. There's no right or wrong it's your tank do what you want.

100% righ said
We all are different reefers, with our own preferences and thoughts.
Thanks for taking time sharing yours. We can all learn from each other by sharing ours.

I may start another tank dedicated to those "slow growers"

For now i like to keep that "inspiring" growth in my current tanks. I only need to find the discipline to prune more often and find a ecolological way to get rid of those prunings.

This is the outcome .....
Just sharing a "mad" reefers experience.

I did a drastic rescape on the EZ550reef, because it was to much work to maintain.
I hope i can now getaway with another maintenance free year.

So there was no need for judgement...
Judgement is why many knowledgeable reefers often keep thoughts to themselves

Looks really nice !!

I think you have done a great job, would you keep the updates coming? I wasn’t around wend you first done the DSR thread would be cool to see it take off again

"All my corals are mounted to be mobile and are in sections so I can pull and trim as I see fit"

I am all for that strategy - and even making sure that each piece of the aquascape can be removed without disturbing the whole thing.

This is what my doc says will happen to my hair if I stop using Rogaine! Did you get rid of a bunch of coral??

I realy hate this....[emoji33][emoji33][emoji33]

I love the corals, i love the many species, i love the beauty of it all, i love the growth/growthrate.
But the one thing i hate is pruning and the aftermath....
- I hate the work involved.
- I hate it that the tank look like **** in the weeks/months after.
- I hate lobbying with the cuttings.

How do you guys deal with excessive growth?

Thanks, no problem.
Once i a while update the related topics, so you can follow the latest developments in real.

That's very good idea which i try to apply on this scape. I only need to have the discipline to prune in time, before they start growing into eachother

I'm sorry. I have no empathy for those with such overwhelming success. I will gladly pay you to ship me all of your free, unwanted frags.

;)
Haha....How much can you handle?

250x80x40 fragtank ???

This happens when you don't have a emergency break build into your hobby. It goes completely mad

PM me with some specifics. I can't find any nice SPS like you have in our area, especially the staghorns and acropora. I have a lot of other SPS like montipora, put they mostly tend to be plating/encrusting rather than branching.

Maybe get some parrot fish. Not many people can keep them with a healthy diet of corals.
I am not much into parrotfishes, they grow too large.

I do like the scarus quoyi in this tank though. He is quit reefsave too.

These corals kept growing despite the butterflies

Sounds like you need an even bigger tank. 40,000L Upgrade? Then you can have more room for corals to grow and if that tank gets overgrown then you can house a bigger parrot fish to keep them in check.
