So I am trying to re do the lighting array on my 55 gallon tank. I currently have two phlizon blackbox lights and they do not produce the results I am wanting. My last corals died to to lighting issues. I am looking to grow sps lps and softies. I am thinking two 16hd primes supplemented with two A80 kessil tuna blues.

I would definitely look at renting a par meter or if you have a local club that has one borrow it. Then you can get an idea of what you are working with and where your hot/cold zones are. When you know the light levels all over your tank you know what to put where and know what you need to add. Our eyes are really bad at guessing. We have a built-in "f-stop" iris in our eyes that opens and closes without our awareness so it's hard to tell by just looking.

lots of factors affect par beside the actual light. Pigments in the water, the distance of the fixture. I am about to set up a new system after a 15-year absence. I have my lights but won't build the aquascape until I fill the tank and take par readings so I know how high to place things.

I am actually going to purchase one. In the grand scheme of things, they are not expensive compared to the coral and power heads. They are especially important when you don't have a proven light setup that you know works!

I am a big fan of metal halide. I have looked at several LED setups and Kessil high-end LED's online and several in person now. Metal halide is where I went back to. It is what I used to run and it looks so so good. I really tried to talk myself into LED. There are so many things I like about LED. I love everything about them except for the light.

I think you can buy a Par meter from vendors like bulk reef supply and they let you return it after 60-90 days so you can experiment with it and find your happy spots.

It's basically like renting. They charge a restocking fee. Then you can experiment with different lights and pick what looks best while at the same time gives you what you need.

What are your dimensions and how deep are you placing things?

a little google and these show up as popular.
Kessil A160 Tuna Blue LEDs.

But I have no actual experience with them. The best thing you can do is find someone who has your setup and is successful and see what they are running. I am sure someone will chime in here. I know what works for my tank because I ran a similar light setup in the past.

Why not just use 3 ai primes that way you can control all 3 using the app and have more light output?

For what you want to accomplish, I recommend Two Ai Hydra 26 or 32HD and one orphek OR3-120 sky blue.

@noopsyche K7 also very good lights
