ID illness

Definitely seems more like velvet than anything. I'd treat for that first especially as most velvet treatments cure ich as well (not hypo).

This is Amyloodinium ocellatum which is responsible for the disease most commonly known as marine velvet, this dinoflaggelate reproduces so rapidly that if it is not identified and treated fast it could potentially kill all your fish. This Oodinium primarily attacks the gills before the rest of the body, which is why it’s so dangerous and looks like the fish is covered in a velvet film as the white spots are tiny. With Ich, you can count the dots which are larger.
Velvet is most effectively treated with copper, and the fish should be placed in a quarantine tank after a few 2 minute freshwater dips, then you should medicate fish that have reached secondary infection (excessive mucus production as with your fish) with copper solution dosed at 80& of package recommendations.

I’m not seeing Amyloodinium (velvet). I see spots out on the soft fin rays, so that implies Cryptocaryon. Very surprised the moorish doesn’t have symptoms. To be perfectly honest, this has the potential to be a big problem. Seems like the fish have more value than the inverts? What about pulling the inverts and changing over to FOWLR? You could then use copper.

That’s his best option to switch to FOWLR. I’m in the same boat but went in with FOWLR and now entire tank is copper. Just caught some of the fish sleeping that I noticed signs and freshwater dipped.

You can like do the same with your fish. Catch the ones that show signs and freshwater dip. But OP will have to decide if he wants FOWLR. Velvet will kill a lot of the fish if not treated soon if that’s what it is.

So you recommend remove the corals and bta and run copper in the tank. Would copper also mess with my pods I do have 2 mandarin gobies. I would rather do a large drop off at a lfs and ensure I do not kill off any more than needed. Also what about my algae in my fuge

Hate to say it but I agree Velvet... looks exactly like the early stage on my tang that took out my tank. Wishing you and the fish the best and sending you good juju!!! Following this thread.

Problem is anything you drop off at your lfs may be contaminated at this point and you risk spreading it their way.

Cleaner wrasse won't do anything. He might peck at the dead skin cells left behind by the parasite. But won't do anything in regards to helping your issue and will probably end up eventully succumbing to which ever disease is in your tank with the stress of being introduced and everything else.

I added a cleaner wrasse right in the midst of a velvet breakout hoping for any sort of remedy, the cleaner wrasse is still alive because I dosed the DT with cp. Him being 1 of the 6 fish that survied out of 19. Only problem is to this day, he still scratches. He's the only fish in the tank that does this, he shows no visual symptoms of any parasite but will still scratch every so often. Point being ; adding any other fish right now will do more harm than good

So either treat the DT with copper and loose everything or get a large tank and catch all of the fish and treat them in that.

How large of a tank without filtration would I need for 2 Large maroons, Large bird wrasse, large blue ring angle, very large regal, vlamingi, sail fin, Bristol tooth tang, coral beauty, anthias , niger trigger and a large moorish idol.

How many feet length wise can you accommodate?

You are at the point where you gotta go with what is best available option.

Agreed.. you may not have other fish showing any symptoms but the longer you wait the more likely it is to get worse when velvet decides to fully expose itself... watch out..

How bad do you think my water quality be if I lost all my bta leathers and mandarins. Also can you treat moorish idols in copper?

Don't just let the waste away, remove them before starting treatment.

I can do 6 ft max
Ok that’s awesome news. Your fish are just living there short term so it’ll be tight, but doable. I read a previous post that you have a 20 year old Vlamingi so I know you’re stressing but we’re all here for you! And yes, you can treat moorish idols with copper.

I’m not really making a recommendation - just offering up an option for a potentially very serious situation. I’m a fish guy , so I tend to focus on them, even if the inverts fail...changing to copper n your DT is not without grave risk. If the tank has loads of sponges and sessile inverts, they can die and foul the water. I just think if you try to shoe horn these fish into a new QT for 75 days, there is risk to that as well. In the end, you’ll need to make a risk assessment . Don’t forget- no treatment is guaranteed, but the longer you wait, the less likely it is that the Rx will work.
