Just last week my favorite fish died (orchid dottyback) I had her since she was literally half an inch all the way to being a full grown adult. It looked like she messed up her fin on a rock and a day later I found her dead in my sump. So enough of the sadness; I'd like your opinions of your favorite dottybacks. Also let me know what you like/d about them: personality, color, etc. Please and thank you :)

Every dottyback I've ever had other than orchid were horrible critters that bullied fish to death, some even attacked me.

See that's what I was nervous about. I loved my orchid but I don't want the same fish. My orchid was a model citizen in my tank, one fish I had since my setup and never bullied anyone. I work at a petco and the came in from ORA tinier than the width of my pinkie nail so my heart won't let me just try to replace that exact fish. Anyone else with opinions and experiences?

I don't know, I also had a springeri and an orchid. Both of those were good too except the springeri would attack me. I believe tank size needs to be mentioned here. I've had mine in a 200g loaded with other fish and they never bothered any other fish. My neon is currently in a 125g, no issues either. Maybe in a 40 breeder, your going to have issues.

I have had a splendid dotty back for the past year. It's in a 38 with a clown and a yellowtail damsel and is now bigger than both but is rather shy and not aggressive at all. And is really beautiful. Not a hider, it's out and about all day. The yellowtail chases after it frequently, but that doesn't seem to bother the dottyback much. Evidently, this fish is no exception, as the species is reputed to be well behaved. Again, really gorgeous fish. Mine is already about 3 inches. I've read that it may reach 5 inches. I thoroughly recommend this fish! Sorry, no pics, as it's not a photobomber, like the clown and damsel, lol.

Okay so all the ones I was thinking about were mentioned. I work at a petco and I am the one who gets to order fish so getting particular specimens are not that difficult for me. I love neons but the one that is at work was being extremely aggressive towards a molly miller blenny. I really like splendids, everytime I have had one they have been pretty peaceful. I just ordered a springeri that us due to come in this week. I typically quarantine my fish at work because it is less costly for me; I'll probably see how it is aggressive wise. I'm leaning toward springeri or splendid. Thanks for the input guys!!!!!!

Elongatus and coccinicauda are both species that are peaceful dottybacks. Elongatus may be even more peaceful than the orchid.

I have a Splendid Dottyback and I love it. I have had no issues at all from it. In fact he is very laid back. Highly recommended.

I've had the red elongate dottyback, too. Both it and the Splendid came from ORA. The red was peaceful but sort of nervous. And not as attractive as the Splendid. It (Red) went hardwood floor surfing one day during a feeding.
