I wonder...if this box was actually reef crystals salt, and was packaged as regular Instant Ocean?

The reason I am curious is, not only are the parameters what I always tested with IORC, but I now have brown residue over my powerhead, and my mixing container that I never had previously before I started with this box. The parameters I'm testing at are almost identical to what I was testing using Reef Crystals.

It's very possible. I bought two boxes for quick water changes and I do get a brownish ring at the top of the water line in my brutes... I've only tested Alk, haven't tested the other two.

I am on a new box. 15 gallons. 1.025. 9.5/400/1400 (though I hate the Red Sea Magnesium test).

That looks a lot more normal in terms of alk and cal. Mg seems quite high by my experience, though, I'd be interested to see that test result from a Salifert kit vs the Red Sea. It might be closer to 1150 to 1200 after all.

It’s the only magnesium test I have. I haven’t found a magnesium test that people seem to agree that is reliable.

Gotcha. What's the knock on the Salifert Mg test? I haven't heard any bad press on it and it's been very consistent for me over the years. Maybe I need to start using another brand as well to cross check things. FWIW I have also heard the Red sea mg test is not to be trusted and have no plans to start using.

Salifert magnesium kit works just fine. Your last results are closer to what IO typically mixes up at (except for the magnesium).

I emailed IO and they said it’s not impossible for IORC to be packaged as IO, it’s highly unlikely. I can’t explain the readings except perhaps I was the .01% of 1% chance
