Hello. I heard about the benefits of dosing iodine to boost growth of zoas. I also heard that testing for iodine is inaccurate due to the many forms of iodine or something along that line. So im wondering product do you guys use to dose iodine and what test kit do u use?

Salifert and Red Sea both make iodine test kits. You can get them from Bulk Reef Supply. I have not tried either one. Often you can get an idea by seeing if anyone has a you tube video review.

I have red Sea iodine test and it seems to be pretty good. ICP test showed iodine low and red Sea low too. And dos Kent tech1 iodine just every once in a while maybe once a week. And red Sea still shows low so I know I'm not over dosing.

My Iodine is always low on my ATI test. (I also use the ATI supplements as their test test tells you exactly how much to dose to bring it back to natural sea water levels) Every time that I do this, I see immediate results in my acros so I have started dosing a little every week and using the Red Sea test kit to make sure I don't go over. Tomorrow I will submit a new ATI test and in 10 days should see if my weekly additions have paid off. (I send in an ATI test every 2 months.

Send @Rick Mathew a message. He has done quite a bit of research on iodine testing. He might have some ideas for you.

I'm not convinced supplemental iodine is useful, but tests such as the Salifert kit seems reasonable when I was dosing and monitoring it. It depletes rapidly in most tanks.

A local fish store suggested low iodine could be why my emerald crabs all turn white and die after a short while. Any truth to this. Even if I hand feed them daily they still turn whiteish and croak.

That last sentence gives me a lot of comfort lol. I have NEVER been able to detect more than a trace amount of Iodine in my system and I was dosing HEAVILY at one point to get that trace reading. Ok I need to stop now, having bad flashbacks from my Red Sea Colors days (glad I switched)

I doubt it. There are lots if myths about iodine, but Little hard evidence even in the scientific literature.

Excess of iodine kills shrimps and crabs!

@Randy Holmes-Farley julian sprung theorized in one of his books that corals use traces like zinc and iodide to oxidize harmful byproduct radicals of photosynthesis, and that possibly there is an antioxidant effect when iodide is converted over to iodate in corals tissue ?

Does this sound feasible to you? chemistry wise?

I don't have a problem keeping shrimp, hermits, or snails. I just can't keep emerald crabs.
Just to be clear, not even one, right? I had one 'alpha' that would absolutely not tolerate another Emerald in the tank and he would dispatch of the new emerald(s) within hours of being added to the tank (he also didn't touch the bubble algae lol)

Yeah, I had two at one point, one died. Then a month or so later the other died. So I waited a month or so and bought one more, lasted maybe 2 months being hand fed almost daily then it died. Same results with my girlfriend's tank. We use the same salt mix.

Any clue if it's different than a shrimp molting? My cleaner molts at least once a month. Was considering buying a red sea colors test kit and the abcd product but it states to only dose with calcium, which I don't dose.

I had an icp test done and iodine came up very low. Since I cannot test I use iodide instead of iodine. Its safe and I only dose 10 ml once a month to 600 + tank volume. It seems to have made a difference in a few softies. I noticed no difference in molts of my shrimps or crabs.
