Has this feeling of the love for reefing or general Z's and P's collecting start to wane on you? To the point where at times you just want to stop the hobby in general or quit?

Be it reason to reefing or getting to other hobbies ?:nerd:

i have thought about throwing in the towel many times. normaly its when i get bored with the tanks. at that point i normaly start a new system. for me its the building thats fun. i'm all into it when building but once the tank is set and perfect and all corals are in place i lose all interest for some reason. i dont know. it is a hobby after all so once it becomes more of a chore then fun its time to call it quites

I haven't been on the z's and p's collecting mode for almost 2 years now... I guess after owning and seeing hundreds of morphs, I needed a break... my tank is more LPS dominated now... I've only gotten maybe 4-5 morphs the past 2 years that I haven't seen or owned that I really liked... don't get me wrong, there's a lot of nice morphs out there but for my tank, I only had room for about 20 morphs... I'm at about 15 morphs atm... used to have about 75 morphs in the 32g...

so many new corals coming in, but not enough room and/or $$ for it all... LoLz... I've been focusing more on getting a "reef tank" going, not a frag reef tank...

I still love reefing and collecting Zs and Ps; I would say that my focus has definitely shifted over the years. I also would say that my time/ambition for my tank and the forums wans on a seasonal basis. While I love being able to get on the forums and talk "reef" or Zs and Ps with the good folks here and else where, in the summer time life becomes soooo busy with outside chores that I just don't have the time to dedicate to visiting the forums or even giving my tank the attention that it needs. My goal for this summer is to get through the summer with everything in the tank still looking happy and healthy, instead of having it look like someone dropped a algae bomb in the tank, and it takes me six months in the fall to get everything back on track.

Thanks for chiming in folks, I know there's more folks out there please feel free to voice your input.

The few times I have felt like throwing in the towel have been after major issues like major algea issues or cracked pane......I had about 100+ morphs before I switched tanks to my 60 cube I have now. The first cubes front pane cracked and spilled it's contents after 2 weeks of set-up. I lost about 90% of my Zs and Ps at that time, some of which I have never seen again and some that I have replaced. I felt like throwing in the towel after that, but after 25 years I couldn't go without one and the dealer replaced tank and stand at no cost of course......I have switched up the main focus back to ricordea and LPS, with a smattering of Zs and Ps, SPS. I don't think I could be mentally stabile without my tank......

I have loved the hobby for years. Having some ups and downs too. building it up and then killing thousands by temp swings. my zoa collection was doing good and then an hybrid angel almost killed them all while holding it for some one. as soon as i get my zoas back on track. i decide to get more and get a fungus issue on some of my favorites. the ups and downs. now i still enjoy the hobby but i must say some of the peeps now are draging me down. i must be strong and hmm just ignore them.. =). I have been thinking of starting a thread.. show us what you killed thread but i think to many would lurk and hmm be to embarassed to show. i realy miss my king midas zoas

I just don't like the macro enhanced zoa pix that don't represent the color right and even if it did, you couldn't see the detail unless you're 6 inches away.

Ive seen a couple pix lately of some expensive zoas that look nothing like the photo in standard tank lighting and I feel bad for the guys dropping that kind of cash for them.

I didn't agree with the My Miami/$1500 a frag thing but at least it's a one of a kind amazing coral. You can be feet away from the tank and notice it, even a 1/2" frag.

Just my opinion but you can't beat a colony or Nightmares, Sunny Ds, darth mauls or candy apple reds and the beauty is that they're $20 a polyp max!! :D

plus one. i think the peeps at the shows with 30k lighting sets disapointments too when they get home.. they are like.. hmm my zoa is brown.
sunny d's and candy apples. i will add tubes blues too. it don't get much better.

That's what I've always sold them for, unfortunately my colony stopped growing

that seems be the going rate here in socal, time to leave Kansas!! :D

I want to say a cool witty comeback like 'maybe if the taxes were cheaper!'

However SoCal is still way cooler than KS...... haha

I never had money to buy all the goodies for my tank. So it was always pretty crappy. But now that I dragged my older brother(who works and makes pretty decent money) into the hobby we combined our two smaller tanks and now have tunzes, vortechs, controllers, basically all the cool gadgets. So it's like a new start for me. :D He is crazy about the hobby like me, so it's pretty awesome.
I also got my younger brother into the hobby. He just set up a new biocube 12.

I have thought about quitting the hobby many times after watching some really nice pieces just wither away for whatever reason i can never figure out... esp zoas and palys... but looking at it again, iv put a lot of work, money, and time into this hobby and i would hate for it to end after all that. Plus just looking at the tank on the good days makes everything worth it :) ill always love this hobby though.

++2:smile:

Once my tank filled up it wasn't as exciting. Part of the excitement for me is building the tank, and also collecting the corals. Nothing beats getting that box and opening it up to see what the goodies look like.

One thing I don't like about the hobby is all the pictures you see are just tiny little frags. The chalice thread is filled with pics of corals that don't even cover a 1/2" plug.

Plus I took up brewing beer recently and thats been really fun. Its kinda put my cube build on the back burner cuz i just wanna brew beer every weekend lol

When I got into this hobby in 95' I was amazed at everything. I'd get LR and enjoy looking at the pods lol. Now I seem to go through trends where I see my self still spending gobs of money, and doing my maintance but never really spending time in front of the tank enjoying it. I recently set up a 25 gal cube in my bedroom for fun, and I spent the last few days wondering why I bothered. On the other hand I couldnt live with out some type of tank in the house, I have a connection with the ocean and having a tank makes me feel generally happier. I can't wait until my son is scuba certified so I have a new dive buddy to drag out.

I do agree with someone that said the fun part is in the builds. Also love the new equipment and trying new things out.

Some weeks I find I spent more time on the forums then I did in-front of my tank though, then I have to question the point. Especially with my 500-600 a month electric bill....
