So I’m currently in the “build” stage of my new tank. Finally decided on a logical and realistic tank for my life style. It’s a 300 gallon, 72x36x30.

The tank will mainly be SPS with some LPS and softies here and there.

I’m debating going with 3 kessil a360x + 4 80watt t5 or 3 radion xr 15 with the same t5.
With both options there would be a possibility of adding 3 more of each LED in the end, so 2 rows of 3.

I have a similar size tank (270g, 72"x36"x24"). I run an 8 bulb x 80 watt sunpower with 6 kessil a360we. The t5 fixture is in the center with 3 kessils in front and 3 behind angled in. Mine may be overkill though. I personally don't think 4 bulb t5 with 3 kessil or radion xr 15 will give you adequate coverage with the 36" depth, especially on an sps dominant tank. 4 bulbs or better yet, 6 bulbs of t5 with 6 led fixtures would be ideal. Just my personal opinion.

I actually publish a video about this, this morning :

In short
Radion = Goes deeper
Kessil = Look better

The T5 will be a must I believe.

I keep seeing people say the Kessils don’t grow coral very well. How true is that?

Maybe I will go with the kessil. Use 3 kessil X then the 3 kessil 160 I currently have, plus t5

With that tank width, you will definitely need more than 3 kessil A360x or 3 radion XR15 if you plan to keep SPS (or consider adding more T5 bulbs).

Definitely agree. I’d be adding more lights, but for a start it’d be 3 of one or the other. Then add more. Just trying to decide kessil or radion

I think both LEDs are awesome choices and the 360x looks real good and would be fun to play with. Some mornings I wake up wanting to go with radion gen 4 pros, then the next morning I'm a fan of the kessils lol.
The suggestions about more lighting to cover that 72x36 footprint I would agree with. I think a great hybrid set up would be 2 t5s in front, the a row of leds, 2 t5s in the middle, then 2nd row of leds with another 2 t5s in the back.

Well, I have owned both. I think both are excellent lights and only have slight differences. The radion XR15 pros I owned put out more par than my kessils A360WE, but part of that was due to the fact that I ran my kessils on a very blue setting so I was not utilizing the white LEDs as much as I was on the radions. Also, the kessil wide angle lens gives a slightly wider spread than the radions. I mount my lights very high above the tank (like 16"), so the kessils give me very uniform par but lower par numbers versus if I used a more traditional mounting height. Overall, though, I still believe the radions were probably more powerful but I can't say how they would stack up against the newer kessil. As far as even spread, color separation, and shimmer, the kessils were definitely superior. I wouldn't be concerned about hot spots with the XR15 pros like I might with the XR30s that has two pucks closer together. In fact, I think the slightly less wide angle lens on the radion would be helpful for the 24" tank depth. The color separation on the radions, though, is noticeable to me but not that noticeable when ran with T5s (or if diffusers are used). The shimmer on the kessil is great. With T5s being ran, shimmer from either unit is going to be muted down, though, and probably not a differentiating factor. Ran by themselves, kessil shimmer is better than the radions. As far as controlability, I think it depends on what you prefer. The simplicity of the kessil controls is appealing to me personally, but if you really like to fine tune things, the radions would be better suited. Of course, this may not be true when comparing to the new kessils, as I'm comparing the radion XR15 pro to the older kessil A360We model. As far as color, I think both lights put out nice color. Kessil makes their own LEDs but I believe they are quality. The radion LEDs are quality chips from known high end companies (such as CREE Royal Blue 450 nm).

Thanks for this detailed comparison. Both lights would be controlled via Apex, and I agree that the kessil has less tuning options, but I’d be less inclined to play around with the settings.

The tank is 30 inches deep. And I’m about 80% leaning to the Kessils. I like to run a longer photo period and more white so the less par would benefit me (WWC runs about 200 par on there displays on a longer photo period) .

Add the T5s I think that would give me what I want as far as colour, shimmer and growth.

I personally love the T5 combination with Kessils. For that tank width and depth, you might also want to consider the AP700. The AP700 has about 2.5x the power of one Kessil A360we (so you get a little more bang for your buck). I think you could start with two AP700, although I think you would need a 3rd later. But then again I think you are going to need 5 to 6 Kessil A360's for that tank width and depth (and maybe the Narrow lens version).

The a360x doesn’t come in narrow or wide angle versions. But I’d rather go with individual lights over single panels that way I can get optimal spread and run t5 in between them.
