Six months ago, a good friend and client of mine, purchased a juvenile Koran Angelfish for his 160 gallon saltwater aquarium. This fish was purchased healthy and quarantined in one of my aquariums for 5 weeks. However when I visited His tank to see how it’s doing, I noticed holes on the side of its face. The owner doesn’t know when or how these holes occurred, but there are currently 4 in total, 2 holes on each side. My suspicion is that either there is some sort of parasite on the fish, or it hurt itself by crashing into the rocks. Either way, what recommendations would you guys have for me with this angelfish?

not uncommon in tangs and angels and is due to vitamin deficiency AKA hole in the head disease. It can be overcome by adding and offering high nutrition foods such as LRS with selcon or similar vitamins added to foods as well as garlic extract and nori algae sheets.

Thanks for the advice! I had no idea that saltwater fish also could be affected by hole in the head disease. I used to rescue and rehabilitate freshwater Oscar fish with hole in the head. It seems like the treatment won’t be to different from the oscars.

Vetteguy is absolutely correct. Some have also reported it being caused by constant use of carbon. Besides the vitamin fortification other have also used Miracle Mud and had positive results. The though process of Miracle Mud is the algae in the tank is absorbing it and the fish consumes that algae, there by getting a higher nutrient rich diet.

I have never thought of using miracle mud in a tank before! There is no carbon Placed in the tank. The tank and sump were professional made by one of our LFS’s. After looking into the sump. I have realized that it is filled up with garbage. The lack of absolutely no filtration of any kind plus no water changes is very bad for the aquarium. I tested the water recently and the Nitrates and Phosphates are not even readable it’s so high. Turns out, the LFS guy does it on purpose in order to kill the fish and he is the one who later supplies the fish for a high price. I’m going to have to stabilize the tank and bring these fish back to normal health.

Very high nitrates can cause a tang to also acquire what you are seeing. So it may not be diet driven, it could be that the nitrates are affecting the fish. Best approaches to this are definitely getting the nitrates/phosphates under control as well as supplement diet with selcon or other vitamin enriched food supplement. You have to be carful with these diet enhancers because they are also high in nutrients. Miracle mud works very well, but I would not use it in this tank until the nutrients are under control.
