Do these actually help growth or anything or just for the visual pleasure?

they are good for the spawning of corals and other fish (since a lot takes place at night time). it completes the photocycle. it helps with stressed fish introduced at night to better find hiding spots also. plus you can still view your tank at night and its like a totally different tank
