Morning all!! I’ve been in the hobby for a few years but am still a newbie to SPS type corals. I’m looking for a good site or reference to help learn the names/types of SPS. What has helped you guys the most in learning all the different types of coral out there?

Become obsessed with Acros. There are so many species of Acropora out there, and each having its own color variations seems like an endless amount of corals. Then each coral can grow differently depending on lighting, flow etc.. The Australian Institute of Marine Science has a good site for reference. Most of their photos are shot with flash which takes away colors from the coral, but you get a good idea for structure. It really comes down to how much time you want to spend looking at corals and learning about them.

I have been accused of being a nerd many times by my wife after breaking out my 3 volumes of Veron’s Books. They’re pricey but an absolute essential for any coral addict!

If you need something online, go to the acropora section of Divers Den... they have photos and names. They are mostly right with their names. It can be like playing the match game where you look at the photo, guess and then glance at the name.
