I have not really been able to find a good place to buy fish locally. I was hoping to order from Dr Reefs but I will have to stock my 2 new tanks slowly after they complete cycling. I would have to pay $60 for shipping every single time I order and that is going to add up for me. What do y'all think about this Facebook post? I found this store in the town next to mine that accepts customers by appointment only. Will I still need to fully quarantine any fish before adding them to the display tank?

Hi, definitely worth making an appointment and checking out , don't see any reason why not... :)

First of all, I am FAR from an expert here, so take this with a grain of salt (pun intended) but I am a big believer in quarantining fish and other livestock, and I do see some red flags that may be a concern....

"We then put our fish through a 3-5 day treatment that targets and cures the many diseases they can come with"

I follow the Reef2Reef approved protocol for quarantining fish, found here, and it's a 76 day procedure. Some reefers talk about other time frames like 30 days or 60 days, but I don't know of any QT protocol that is both effective and only 5 days long. I see this as a big red flag - either this LFS doesn't know what they are doing, or they are misrepresenting their QT procedure.

"We also keep "all" of our livestock in medicated or slightly medicated (inverts) systems to ensure they remain disease free and healthy....."

I am unaware of ANY medication that's appropriate and effective for inverts at any concentration. Fish are typically prophylactically treated using medications containing copper. Copper at any level is toxic to inverts. The only way I know to QT inverts is to keep them in a fallow tank (a tank that does not have any fish) for a period ranging from 30-90 days depending on who you ask. This will starve out most fish parasites, but there is no medication that does this, only time. Again, this LFS is either wrong or misrepresenting their QT procedure.

I understand that you are trying to avoid the whole QT process yourself, but in my opinion you would be best off to QT your livestock yourself. I personally have three QT tanks going - a medicated fish QT tank, a coral holding/observation tank, and a third tank just for motile (moving) inverts like snails, crabs, shrimp, etc.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you so much! I completely agree with you. I'm new to this but I have been doing my research and this just doesn't give me peace of mind. I'm going to continue researching while I'm waiting on my tanks to cycle and then I am going to have to figure out where to set up some quarantine tanks. I am definitely going to check them out but I am going to have to quarantine myself. From what I'm understanding, this stores process will probably just keep any problems at bay long enough until I get them home. This info definitely helps.

I just didn't want you to pay extra for fish that are "quarantined" only to later have an issue and then be disappointed. Doing it at home yourself doesn't have to be terribly elaborate or overly expensive, but will take some extra tanks and some time. There's more than one way to do it, so do a bit of research and go with what makes you feel comfortable. Again, I use the R2R protocol here, a lot of people go by the HumbleFish method, and BRS put out some good videos on QT basics too. There's also the Tank Transfer Method for fish QT that does not use any medications like copper.
