I'm setting up a 90 gallon tank but I'm having trouble getting it quiet. I used an oversized durso standpipe and ran the drain straght down into the sump. There is a gurgling noise coming from the overflow and a loud bubbling noise in the sump. I tried inserting airline tubing into the standpipe and reverse durso in the sump but nothing works. I even dialed back the pump with a ball valve. Is the herbie method the only way to quiet the tank? I really don't want to return line over the back of tank because I wanted a clean look. The tank is in my family room so it has to be quiet. Thanks.

You may need a little bigger hole in the top of the standpipe. In the sump I had the same problem cause I had the pipe going almost to the bottom. I cut that back to just under the water level and that stopped. It sounds just like a jacuzzi! Haha!

That's exactly what mine sounds like! What size hole did you use? I tried using different sizes and even multiple holes but nothing has worked.
