Personally I used finer sand for mine. Make sure you make it thicker too. Mine actually broke his jaw when he dove into the sand because he hit the bottom. He still cant fully close his mouth.
 
They sleep in the sand at night, so you will need to keep a sand bed of at least 2 to 4 inches to allow them to go to bed at night. They also go into the sand when they are frightened. The sand should be of small to medium in size--no more than 4mm in average size of the grains.
