Hey all, while doing a water change I forgot to turn off my heater in the brute. Melted about 2 inches of surface. It didn’t melt all the way through and seems to hold water fine. My question is is there any toxins that could have been released from the burning? There’s still residual plastic on the heater itself. Should I toss both?

The brute is normally food safe. On the bottom should be a recycle #2 on it. I would say thats fine if it dosen't leak. The heater I would toss, it could remelt or blow up.

It is a food safe version just wasn’t sure with the melting of it that would release anything in the process.

HDPE is rather safe.
While its heated the fumes can be a lung or eye irritant. After it has cooled i would just rinse. A few times make sure no debris is left.
