Has anyone seen the recent youtube video of his QT system. He has it plumbed inline with his main system. He said in the video that because it flows through his ozone reactor, he isn't worried about introducing any parasites into his main system. I would be very concerned about something getting through. Although he has been in the hobby for a long time and has some very nice systems, I don't know if I would consider this a good practice. What do you guys think?!

I couldn't even bother watching the video.....because why would you take a chance of introducing stuff into your entire system. I think he's nuts! A power failure, the ozone system stopping, some little bug getting past the ozone....why take that chance. QT is a quarantine.....Mike's system is a crap-shoot.

From what I have read, Ich is pretty immune to ozone at certain stages of its life. I think it is bad information and allot of new people watch those videos and are setting themselves up for failure. Glad I am not the only one who thinks so.

I watched the entire video. He said his return goes thru his o zone. Interesting though

Agreed. I'll admit I only glanced at the video, but can't tell how close his QT is to the main system. I wonder if Mike knows about aerosol transmission: https://www.reef2reef.com/forums/fish-disease-treatment-diagnosis/190292-aerosol-transmission.html

I think it is a bad business practice for them to disable posting on their videos. Most of their information is highly opinionated and doesn't give any place for others to debate their claims.

I did this for a while with out any problem, however I ran the return water through a UV sterilizer, before it was returned to the sump. While it may not be as safe as a completely separate system, it has many advantages.
You take advantage of the biologically stable main system,
Don't need additional heaters and pumps,
Don't need an additional auto top off,
You don't have to test another system for PH, ALK, CA, Nitrate, ammonia & nitrite.
You can also take it online or off line very quickly depending on how you set it up.
I first did it because I did not have enough heaters to keep my prop system and the QT temps stable when a unexpected cold spell hit.
Considering how few people use a QT at all, the ease of set up and low cost of setting up a QT this way might encourage more people to use one. I will use it again in the future and plan to design it into sump & plumping design of my new system.

From the dead! I still think it is better than nothing, but isn't near as good as proper procedure.

Oh yea didnt notice that. Totally weird. Mike P did help or hang out with the guys who invented the procedure. He also like s gadgets and get bored too though. Really how many of the world reef can you dive on.
