I am going to add a hange on refigum on my 60 gal. CPR make three sizes small, med, and large. I would like to know what size my fellow reefers recommend. Also does any one use the mirace mud with it. Please let me know what type of success you have had. Thanks Frank

i just bought a small used cpr aquafuge had it about 2 weeks. i wanted to get miricle mud also but some people said it is snakeoil. i have chaeto algea in it and i added some caribbean cultured rock and broke it with a chisel. iput it in the fuge with the pieces of the rock that were the out side facing up to the light and everything that was left was some mud sand and different size pieces of gravel dumped that in as well. i left it settle and cycle. then i installed it on my tank. now i have loads of pods already and what looks like tunicates forming. lately i am looking in my fuge with magnafying glass more than looking at my display tank.

totally depends on the biotope you are aiming to keep. personally, anything with "miracle" in the name in this hobby gets a laugh from me. however there are some locals who swear by the ecosystem "method" for their dirtier water softy lagoonal type systems.

I have used miracle mud in my sump with macro. I took it out because it accumulated too much debris. I did have lots of pods but after I took it out I still have tons of pods in my DT. Didn't feel it gave me anything extra just extra work to clean.

hi frank, i just saw you are from cape may nj. i use to go there for vacation when i was a kid. we stayed at 11 perry st. that was about 37 years ago. i was about 10years old but i always remembered the address.

Unless you're wanting to do some odd types of macro or mangroves I can't think of a single reason to use any of the mud products.

The muds claim to add a lot of nutrients, if I had deep pockets, I would probably use it. But I don't have money to burn (or bury) I use a shallow, fine sand bed and my mangroves are doing great.

What it claims and what it actually does and benefits are two VERY different things.

I just dont suck the detritus out of my fuge...I have only done it once in the past year and I sucked out about a half inch of home made "miracle" mud.

i saw a study done on miracle mud a few years ago. the result was that they found nothing to suggest it came from the ocean. i had pieces of red brick and some shiny man-made plastic things in mine.
it's from someone's back yard. hardly a "miracle".
pods will be there, top soil in the tank or not.

Glad you got this thread going Frank. Im interested as well. I heard there is copper content on the product. I also heard that it is just soil from bali. Also heard that some museum is using it and it works great. Not sure if it's good or bad, but it's suppose to also color up corals better.

used it....got rid of it. no miracles here, and my corals look better without it. even if you want a mud type refugium, there are much cheaper ways to do it.

Im in the process of testing on a few tanks with miracle. Started about two weeks ago. Im testing a fuge only with the miracle mud and ecosystem sump, and Im testing a half fuge and skimmer type sump. Ive talked to Ling personally and he is very confident in his products. Its a lot more than just having a refugium with miracle mud in it. You must have the proper amount of flow going over the mud bed, and most important you must have the right amount of surface area of mud for the size tank you have.

I don't mind the effort. I have plenty of tanks to experiment with. Ling is a very knowledgeable and experienced reefer. He has a very large clientele that also believe in his system.

I actually decided to use mud in my new fuge. I have talked to a few people about it and all has been positive. I do run a Koralia Nano in my fuge to help keep the detrius suspended as well though. From what I heard it helps with different micro-organisms like worms and so forth. I thought why not try it it can't hurt. I have not seen any side effects yet.

Its only been up and running for a little over 3 weeks though but I did notice my pod population is growing as well as my micro-brittles. Not sure if its because I went to a bigger fuge or if its because of the mud though. Jury is out on it for me but as of now I have nothing negative to say about it.
