I currently have a 55 gal tank upstairs in my room. We are working on finding a nice stand and relocating it to our living room. Right now the only filtration is a fluval canister filter. I am looking to have a 30 gal sump eventually. The issue is I absolutely know nothing about sumps or plumbing. Any help is appreciated as right now I am looking to learn everything about it.

When it comes to sumps the possibilities are literly endless. It really depends on what equipment your looking to house in it. Generally biggest piece of equipment actually in a sump is your skimmer so look for a skimmer first then a sump to fit it. Another thing to consider is price, they make some very nice manufactured sumps but run pretty expensive and limit you to there specs. A cheaper more custom route is a petco 1$ a gallon sale and pick up a aqueon tank that will fit under your stand and place baffles in it that way. Just look in the diy section there not difficult. One thing I'd say is put a small recirculation fan in the sump to help stir detritus and get a return pump at least twice the size u need and manifold it to run your reactors instead of running individual pumps for each reactor. To be honest the possibilities are endless and it's what u really want to get out of it. Start with the equipment then find the sump to fit it.
