New tank, 65G rimless ... 36x20x21 1/2 inch glass

I had originally planned for two MP10's but the glass width has me concerned. Would the MP40's be an overkill?

Thanks

What do you plan on keeping in the tank?

My current 65 is a softie tank (( Xenia )) with an S. haddoni, so the 2 MP10s are more than enough.

Recommended glass thickness for the MP10 is 3/8". Glass that is took thick causes the wet-side to rotate, from what I've seen.

You can always dial the mp40s down. And if u decide to go bigger later on you still have yourself a set of great power heads. Overkill... Maybe on your wallet but like I said you can always turn them down to fit your tank.

I am fairly certain the Mp10's can handle the flow I need. I am worried about them moving or falling with the glass thickness. I also like the idea of running the 40's dialed down instead of pushing the 10's.

thanks everyone

Mp10's is all you need but because of the thickness of your glass you will not be able to use them. On that thick of glass the mp10 will barely hang on and the slightest movement knocks them off. You will have to use a mp40 and dial it down to the appropriate flow you want.

Times like this make me wish they still made the mp20

The price isn't a far difference so I'd go with an MP40QCD over the MP10. In case you ever decide to upgrade you have a pump that can handle the water volume.

65g and 1/2" glass seems very unlikely to me. Is it acrylic? That just doesn't sound right. I have a 93 cube and it's only 3/8" thick.

That is what I was thinking akida17th, the 40's aren't crazy expensive compared to the 10's

hybridazan... they seemed to hang on strong in the store but that was without water and not running so it isn't a reliable test.

I need to go and measure again, I am fairly certain it was 1/2 inch. It is the low iron glass so that might be a factor too in the 10's staying put from what I have read

I have a 50g cube that has 1/2" glass. It depends on how the tank was made, not just the volume of water it holds.

My 180 has 1/2" glass and mp10s don't hold for anything. Ive heard of ppl using a small dab of silicone to help hold them on as well.

I say the MP40 because you can dial it down and it will give you better scalability for the future. I like to go bigger because if you ever get a bigger tank or get corals that need higher flow you have power heads that already work. Plus if you switch to SPS you can just turn it up. The MP 40 works perfect on your size of tank.
