One of my MP40 power supplies died. Last night I noticed the lights weren't on one of the controllers. Since it was late, I waited until this morning to investigate. Easy test, simply unplugged the connector from a running controller and plugged it into the non-running controller....and it work. Told me it had something to do with the power supply.
Next I checked the obvious...plugged in, power to that outlet....all OK. No little green light on the front of the power supply. The power supply was dead.
So no big deal....I'm a backup fanatic, I've got a spare. I went to plug it in and the adapter didn't fit the controller. Same voltage, same amps....different adapter plug. Why do they do this! I eventually discovered that this plug fit my "newer" controllers.
Now, when I say I have old MP's (and controllers), I always get a kick out of when someone asks what percentage or how high I'm running them. The old controllers had a knob (that little black stick on the bottom left) and you had no idea (but a guess) as to how high you ran them....maybe guessing quarters, about 25%, 50%, 75% or 100%. Let me show you what controllers I'm talking about...the three across the top, and the one just below, in the middle. The long (vertical) Vortech controller is the "newer" model, but still old, and has the arch of lights and a big knob, giving you an idea of how high or low you're running it.
So again, no big deal....I've ordered a replacement a number of years ago off eBay for $11. When I went back to that supplier, that power supply is no longer available. And I guess I was just lucky back then to get the right adapter plug. So instead of attempting to source an eBay/Amazon inexpensive replacement (with an unknown plug), I went to a legit supplier.....Jameco....note, still less expensive than Ecotech, which sells for about $50.
My original Ecotech power supply part number is ADPA60ABB, a 24 volt, 2.5 A output. I'm 99% positive that the replacement from Jameco is THIS ONE, Jameco Part no.: 2229992, for $15.95. Now if you're interested, please note that it doesn't come with the power cord (part no. 38050) that's another $4.59. Note that I did not order the cord, because it's the same cord on the old Ecotech power supply.
So being a back-up nut, I ordered two, and with shipping (UPS $8.38), and tax, a total of $42.39. I get two for less than one from Ecotech! And I'm back in business as far as having a back-up.
Sorry for the long post, but trying to document as much as I can for the next time I have to do this. So the difference in plug adapter ends.....It appears the old power supplies use 5.5 mm outside diameter plugs with a 2.5 mm diameter "hole" inside. The new power supplies (vertical controllers), including the one QD power supply I checked, uses the same 5.5 mm outside diameter, but a 2.1 mm inside diameter. That's it!

. Will definitely keep this company in mind for replacement power supplies.
