Naso tang

And I have seen him peck at the bottom of tank but I doubt there os alot of food down there
I just started using Selcon supplement with frozen foods. I got it for a very skinny yellow tang and he and my other fish eat more aggressively with it!
I also tryed selcon ha I have always used that for all my fish

I also tryed selcon ha I have always used that for all my fish
Guess I'm gonna just have to give more time hopefully he settles in and starts eating I have tryed everything I think besides live brine bit can't find that around me so might try to order some online of he doesn't eat soon

I noticed your post here. I too have a Naso that was not a real good eater at first. He is now a monster pig. Two suggestions:
  1. Romaine Lettuce - It has very little nutritional value.... but I found these fish go ape over it. As an enticement, pick up some romaine lettuce and clip it or band it to a rock.
  2. I don't feed nori from LFS or on-line. That *%$& is crazy expensive. I do feed my fish a dryed, non-salted, no preservative seaweed I get from a local grocery store. I get a package for $3-4 that pretty much lasts me an entire month. I cut the sheets down to about 3" squares which is about a 1/4 of the original size and I store them in a ziplock bag. I also feed one square a day, usually in the morning. My Naso, Yellow and Rabbit fish all munch it. But the Naso is the king.
  3. I also feed Rod's reef food along with Atlantic plankton and mysis.

The trick for me was to get him to eat and the romaine did it. I wouldn't feed it for too long as many will say here it has very little nutritional value. But...if it can help the fish to get to eat... great. By the way, I have heard that a lot of the collectors and distributors will also feed lettuce to their tangs when they are collected and transported.

I hope this helps!

Cool thx for ur reply gonna pick up some romaine lettuce and see if that works

Thinking I got a dud naso ha I finally found live brine he wasn't interested tryed green purple and red seaweed no go and romaine lettuce guess I'm gonna set up a quartine tank should have done that in the first place but thought I could get away with not doing it since he looks healthy if this one doesn't make it any one have suggestions on online places to buy fish maybe I will have better luck that way idk really hoping he just decides to eat kinda already got attached to this one

Do you have an algae on your rocks? There is a decent chance it is pecking away at the rocks when you are not around.

Some tangs specifically do not like "clips". I know with my Kole, it would never eat nori on a clip, but when I rubberbanded some to a piece of rubble, and threw it in, that was eaten well.

I second the live brine as an "enticement." Does it look "thick" like it has been eating, or is it looking "sunken in."
This was my experience, too. It was all about the presentation. With the nori in a clip they would swim up to it and swim away. Once I used a rubber band to wrap it around a small section of PVC pipe and dropped it into the tank they went right after it. After a few days I switched to using a magnetic pouch feeder and the Tangs kept going right after it.

I have a powder blue that was skinny when i bought it and did not want to eat. As has been said, algea sheets rubber band on a rock or pvc did the trick. After that he started eating everything. Today he is big and a fatty.

Since you called him a dud. If you think you can't get him to eat and are close to me i would buy him. Don't want to see him pass away.

No updates? :(

If he hasn't eaten yet it's highly likely you're going to lose him. Please do try all possible methods and don't give up, it would be a very sad day to see such fish just starve to death. I couldn't respond to you properly before that's why I just left a link to my story however here are the things that worked:

1) Make a mix of phytoplankton & mysis shrimp. Broadcast feed that over the reef and throw in a few small free float pieces of red nori.
2) If he nips at the red nori go ahead and keep placing small free floating pieces throughout the day
3) If you can get some live caulerpa (commonly used in refrigerium) tie a few pieces to a rock, throw it in the water and leave the room.
4) If he still doesn't eat then drastic methods need to be used:
  • Place him in quarantine, very low lights
  • Have plenty of phytoplankton in the water and obviously keep up with daily water changes as your ammonia levels will sky rocket
  • Have a lot of red / green nori & caulerpa scattered in the QT at some point he will just go for it.
It's very common for these fish to go on a hunger strike when moved I've spent the whole first week I got mine constantly reading and trying different methods. I went to the extend of taking days off work to go buy different foods and research more methods until he finally ate and now I can't keep up with him, buying nori like crazy. Good luck!

P.S. If you're not willing to go through the work I would highly recommend to just return him to LFS to sell here

Just wanted to let everyone know 13 days in he finally started eating some seaweed I put in there but won't take anything else he is pretty skinny now idk if he will make it but at least he is eating something now I spent triple the money on offering him foods then i payed for fish ha but it was worth it if he makes it thanks again for everyone's help

My juvenile Achilles didnt eat any food (including frozen mysis) until about a week later. He was very picky even on the seaweed. It will get better. He eats everything now

Just letting u know fish is still hanging in there he went crazy for some spinach leaves kinda funny only cost me a dollar for it went I spent like 60 on special fish only food for him I know he prolly can't live long term off of that but maybe it will get him going on other stuff

Spinach should be very nutritious! I would recommend reading up on its nutritional values. Afterall, Popeye got all his power from spinach! Happy reefing! Wild caught fish, especially juveniles, sometimes resist eating dry fish food until they're accustomed to the feeding regime.
