Need help identifying the black spots around the mouth of my unicorn tang. Also have a yellow tang in the tank, showing no signs of whatever this is.

Looks too large for black ich. Have you noticed any fighting in the tank, any rubbing or flashing against rocks?

It’s odd, I had a typical orange clownfish that got spots that looked similar to that for a few weeks. Then the spots went away. Not sure what this is though!

Haven't seen any, although I do have a very large female tomato that thinks she owns the tank and likes to chase all the other fish or of her corner.

could be bruising from fighting. Keep an eye on aggression and see if it goes away. Can you also post water params and how long you had the fish?

I've had the fish for two weeks, purchased at a reputable lfs.

Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 0
Salinity: .26
Mag: 1400
Alk: 10
Calc: 460
PH: 8
Phosphates: .34 (currently battling to lower with GFO reactor and less feeding)

Alk, calcium and phosphates all checked with Hanna.

My clown was still juvenile at that time and it’s strange after the spots went away the fish matured and got larger. Not saying that’s what’s happening for you or that had anything to do with the spots lol

Added to my params above, got a false reading on my nitrates earlier, definitely testing 40ppm

All things to consider though, lots going on in a tank when we're not able to be there watching.
