Hi All,

My frogspawn has been doing well for the past 3 weeks and then all of a sudden started closing. The other 3 heads seems to be doing well. I haven't move the coral and changed anything to stress it out. Any advice will be appreciated.

Do you have any peppermint shrimp in your system? Crabs? Peppermint's are know to destroy hammers and frog spawn.

Any brown jelly looking material coming from the center of the mouths?

Hi Flippers,
I don't see any brown jelly around the mouth and don't have any shrimp or crabs at the moment. What does the coral look like when it split heads?

Hey this actually happend to me about 4hrs ago. To find out that my peppermint shrimp was eating the frogspawn and hammer coral. Maybe you have something that's irritating them.

What are your tank parameters? Lighting? Have you noticed any pests around the base of them? Just looking at that picture none of the heads seem to be really happy which suggests an underlying problem.

Hi FindNemo,

It might have been the hair algae that was around the frogspawn. I don't have any fish or shrimps in the tank at the moment. Just CUC and corals. I cleaned up the algae and now have to wait and see if the coral responds.

How often are you feeding your corals and what are you currently feeding your tank? My frogspawn and hammer showed a noticeable improvement if I stick to two small feedings of reef frenzy per day.

Hi Jesterrace,

I feed mysis shrimp once to twice a week. Very small amounts though. Should I try feeding reef frenzy?

I wonder if your water is 'too clean'. I'm experiencing a very similar issue, my frag opens up just enough like those two heads on the right, and then closes completely, exposing the skeleton when the lights go off. Currently i have one small fish (that doesn't eat much- rainford goby), two snails and maybe 3-4 hermit crabs. I have no detectable levels of Nitrate.

I'm also wondering if my lights aren't programmed strong enough.

Honestly, I would say you need to get some fish and cleanup crew in there as they will require you to feed more often which tends to suit Euphyllia corals better. My Frogspawn and Hammer both look fuller with more extension if I do two small feedings of reef frenzy per day and there is a noticeable difference if I cut back to once per day. They definitely prefer reef frenzy over other food sources (as it has a wider variety of types of food and is a much cleaner food source than mysis pellets or frozen mysis). You can see here what all it has in it:
