I have a 10 gallon sump (for my 25 gallon display) that I made form scratch with glass due to the weird measures of my cabinet. The only is the sump is collecting a lot of detritus, specially in the refugium area, plus a few minor inconveniences, so I decided to dismantle it and rebuild, but need help with the design.

TLDR: Which of these would be best in general and collect as little detritus? Any tips or ideas are also appreciated.

I like option 2... I'm not a fan of thin width bubble traps.

Are you sure your skimmer will fit into the new designated area?

You could actually probably do away with the first baffle and run it open until the baffle going into the return chamber. But this depends if you are set on having a little refugium. This would give more flow around the sump. You can also install a small powerhead in that enlarged chamber to keep detritus moving and then ultimately to be caught in the filter sock.

I don't have a skimmer, so the main filtration would be performed by filter socks and chaetomorpha. I was thinking about removing the first baffle but was afraid it would collect a lot of detritus due to the filter sock containing most of the flow. I also use the first section for adding medias like carbon and GFO
