Hello! Having some trouble deciding on a skimmer. I think I narrowed it down to either the Reef Octopus Elite 150 or 200. Both skimmers will fit my sump. I really like the DC pumps that reef Octo has. I’ve been a fan of their equipment as long as I can remember!

The 150 states 100 gallons on heavy bioload.

The 200 states 125 gallons on heavy bioload (as per BRS) and 200 gallons on heavy bioload (as per coralvue).

Tank: Elos 120xl (127g).

What would be considered a heavy bioload for this size tank?

Please help! I’ve been torn over this for almost a month now. Thank you!

I would go with the 200. You can always dial it down if necessary. As far as bioload goes, I think that's kind of subjective. You have to take into account the number, size and eating habits of your inhabitants, as well as if you tend to feed heavily. Don't know if there's a reliable matrix for figuring out bioload or not. Either way, just pull the trigger and quit driving yourself crazy over it. ;)

Okay. I got it! You can buy the 200, and if you don't like it I'll trade you even up for my Simplicity. :) What could possibly go wrong?

Seriously though, when you do make your decision, try to take into account where your tank might be 3 or 5 years down the road. Not trying to make your decision harder, but you may be able to find a middle ground.

I spoke with someone who has the elos160xl and has the regal 200 (the older version of the elite 200, one of the skimmers I was debating on getting) and said the skimmer is overkill for his system. He has way more fish than I’d have in my tank.

I do see where you’re coming from but I don’t think I’ll upgrade for at least 5 years! Thank you for your input. I’ll be going with the 150.
