Happy lazy Sunday all! One of the first fish I had in my last tank was a bicolor blenny. He was awesome and entertaining I grew fond of him. One day swam right into my mp10 and got sliced and diced. Sad and unfortunate and feeling like it was my fault I purchased a nemprotect guard from BRS. It was awesome and had a clean design. It did everything as advertised. One issue I have jus noticed now as I hooked up my mp10 to my new setup and fired it up was flow. Wow the flow on a small mp10 is very powerful for such a small footprint I can see flow throughout the entire tank! It was shocking I don’t remember it performing that powerfully in the old setup. I then put the nemguard on it and wow night and day difference. The flow is severely weaker and now reminds me of the flow in my old tank. Basically without the nemprotect I had the mp10 at 60% reef crest mode and it was a beast. In order to get that same movement with the nemguard I have to have it set at 100%. That’s a huge difference. Does anyone else notice this or have this issue with a. Nemguard? Maybe a different one on the market that doesn’t hinder flow as much. I like the performance without the nemguard but I don’t want to risk losing a fish down the line.....post a picture below of the nemguard.

@FishOfHex - what have you seen with nem guards?

I had that exactly same problem but later on I got a 3D printer and designed a new version for myself. With a little different shape and with different vents, I only lose 10-15% at most.

It’s the design of the part and the dynamics of how the pump move water... the nem guard has to be made in a way that a nem can not pass through and hurt itself in the guards... okay easy enough make the holes small.... well there in lies another problem the pump pushes water and simultaneously pulls water from the surrounding area, well now the holes in the pump guard were made way smaller because of the nem guard both for intake and output... therefore the pump is way less efficient... there’s trade offs to every design and application I’ve been working on a guard that doesn’t have this problem as much but it’s challenging and have only been able to achieve a 10% improvement on the other models so still a long way to go

Ahh genius! Do you have a picture of it by chance? Would very much like to see it!
Here's a render of the CAD design. I don't have any printed at the moment that aren't in use. It's a tad wider, has more room between the guard and the MP40 cage and the slots give a little more surface area while not allowing as much algae/crud to build up on them.

Beautiful design, I love the maple leaf and that definitely allows for better efficiency !

That’s cleannnnn! The holes are still small enough to keep precious life out awesome! You make me want a 3D printer now.... ;Woot

Thanks guys, I appreciate it! I wish I had the capacity to make a bunch of them but as it is I just produce them for the guys in my local fish groups.
