I'm looking forward to dabbling in macro photography of my reef. I played with the canon 100mm macro (regular edition) and it is fantastic (not sure which canon it was, assuming the mid or smaller sensor). Nikons macro in that range is an 85mm.

what kind of difference am I looking at from the 100mm canon to an 85mm nikon. Any other lens suggestions?

I'll be shooting a 4x2 120, so I'm looking for something which can handle 24" deep.

thanks!

I assume you're shooting something like a D50 or D90? The lens will give a different focal length if used on cameras with larger sensors -- i.e. D3(_,s,x).

Wish I could help you with a specific lens recommendation, but I'm also looking forward to buying a macro lens for my Canon. If you don't get an answer that makes you feel comfortable, I'd go to lensrentals.com and try out their selection. For ~$50 shipped, you can get the 85mm lens for 4 days. Nikon also makes a 105mm Macro lens, and that runs ~$60 shipped for 4 days. (Shipping is $21) Not sure if that's the answer you're looking for, but that's how I plan on going about my own search. There may be camera shops that will let you rent or try out lenses, too. hope this helps

I can assure you the lens was not calibrated properly or it was a soft lens the canon 100mm non L version is amazing. What didn't you like about it?

I'm sorry I did not read the og statement correctly, why not just stick with canon?

Can't really say why I'm leaning with Nikon. I had the same conversation with my wife, for some reason I'm partial to Nikon, but for no really good reason. I'm sure they are both great!

I do like the video on the D3100 with continuous focus. On the other hand I like the 100MM lens from Canon, the 105 from Niko is too much coin for me, not to mention it's an FX lens which is a bit of a waste on a DX camera :(
