Ok guys off topic thread , but I'm in the market for a new camera. Has to be digital , I have a point and shoot but now I'm looking for something a little more . Price is the main concern it needs to be budget friendly and be able to do good tank shots and macro shots as well as whatever else everyone else uses a camera for. Any suggestions ?

I have a d3000 and love it... great for taking photos of the kids and does a decent job on the tank. Adding a few good lenses and it is a good budget cam.

Best buy has the Nikon D 5100 on sale for $699. Very reasonable and an awesome camera. It is a full DSLR, so specialty lenses re additional.

Also inquire about their 18minths no interest. That way you won't have to come out of pocket and pay it off same as cash.

Yea I'm looking for a decent cam too but $600 + to take shots of my corals to show off and help sell few frags but that's to much for me for my purpose. Anything in the $100-$200 range that will do good enough to show color well?

Gmoney....frankly...no.

Go check out eBay. Mine cost in the $400 range. It was barely used (less than 200) shutter clicks. I have put over 1500 since. You need something that you can control just about everything to deal with the lights. But not only that software makes a difference.

Taken with a n 8megapixel point and shoot and no editing:

Taken with my Nikon d3000 in raw format and then I manually adjusted the white balance and sharpened it as well as a bit of vibrance added

Dang Lindsey, it looks like you got about 30 zoa polyps for free.

I have my p&s camera that takes great I water pictures with the housingsome of have seen my dive photo on my Facebook this takes excellent dive photos , but I was afraid that the cumbersome housing might be too difficult do to my aqua scape ....( I've been wanting to rescape but the smart side my brain says let it be) I was hopping something with more zoom that I can take from outside the tank ... Here is a sample of my dive photos

Did you use a macro lens to get these shots ?
I'm looking at the Nikon 3100 but I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need .

no. I want one badly. that is the stock 18-55 lens. I have the tip touching the glass so it is flush to the glass for no distortion and then I zoom in as need be.

I was debating getting a better camera too. I was looking at the nikon d60 with 18-55 mm lens. Ebay price for a used one runs around $400 and that fits my budget nicely.

the D60 was what the d3000 and 3100's were based on.
