So I had some Palys that showed some promise..... But turned out pretty Blah after all.
But They are prolific growers... So today I decided to take some action..
I found my Wifes best pair of scissors and started cutting the paly's heads off as close to the base as I could......I did not try to capture the cut off heads.
Now what do you think will happen?
A. They will grow back with a vengeance
B. I just poisoned my tank with paly toxin and the fish will die
C. They will die off and the base will disintegrate
D. My Wife will find out I used her best scissors and you will never hear from me again

lol! I just hope you sanitized the scissors after using them. Wouldnt want somebody to get cut with the scissors and then face some palytoxin!

; personally, I think D is the most likely option, and then A - C will be irrelavent. FYI, I've had some success with killing unwanted zoas and palys with the same products used to get rid of Aiptasia.

Why didn't you just eat them off since you like licking them so well?

I've used Kalk paste in the past.... Thought I try something different... Maybe I'll use Kalk paste on the left over...
And I did clean the scissors really well
Maybe I should have made this a Poll.....

lol. id guess that those loose polyps are gonna settle in rock crevices in your tank and will start growing. so your gonna end up with them growing in lots of diff. places. ive had mine several times get loose and end up in a rock crevice growing.. errggghhhh
i dont think the base is gonna die. it will just regenerate new heads.

I'd say A and D. I'm glad you cleaned the scissors off very well. Your do realize that until you posted it here you were the only one who knew about it?

so you've had the polyp heads re-attach? I thought they might just die

The ones that look like crap will grow back insanely fast and worse than ever.
If you did this to any nice ones your whole tank would die off!!! Thats how it always works for me. :0

A. Hopefully not, but I think your tank will be covered with palys.

D. Your wifes scissors may start to rust so be sure to rinse them well.

As a woman..and a fellow reefer...I gotta ask...just what makes you men grab for the best pair of scissors..not the pair in the junk drawer but those razor sharp beauties we keep hidden.
As far as the palys go, I'd apply Murphy's law of the reef tank..
#1...the cheaper and more blah a coral the quicker it will grow.
#2...The harder you try to get rid of it, the more places it will crop up.
#3...While attempting to kill the ugly coral...it will do something terrible to cause the death of your prize piece.

And you will not have to tell your wife...we KNOW when you guys have had your grubby paws on our sharp scissors. I don't know how we know...but we DO.. Nice knowing you....

Because the I already ruined the pair in the junk drawer cutting something else and they don't work for s--t now...... But those new ones.... snip, snip ,cut baby cut

Sounds like protopalys. Difficult to irradiate from zoanthus and palythoa colonies, though they mostly seems to invade zoanthus.
Keep snipping the heads off. Eventually the zoanthus will win out leaving no room for the protos to grow back. May take 4-5 times of this, but patience is a virtue when dealing with zoanthids. Stubborn little bast...:ah:

I think your right...about being Protos... and I do see the heads and they look like the cut ends are healing.... next time I will net them out as I cut and I think I will Kalk the remaining base material

I have the same problem with those suckers! Mine are greener in coloration but just as invasive. I've never tried kalk paste or the aiptasia treatment. Does that work? Do you have to do a water change afterwards?

Good luck to you with the scissors and your wife! Being a woman myself, I just bought a pair of cuticle scissors for my tank. Those bad boys are sharp and stainless steel so rusting hasn't been an issue.
