I'm having trouble with brown palys taking over my reef and I cant seem to get rid of them !! I have tried kalk paste, vinegar, boiling water, but the keep coming back stronger than before !! They are taking over my reef and spreading onto other rocks and smothering my sps corals !! Is there anything else I can do or do I give in to them and take out all my live rock and start again !! Any ideas welcome!!

On the right side of my tank in front of the yellow tang was a large colony of red zoas now it's just been taken over by them and up over the large hairy leather coral they have covered some sps coral and they are breaking out in other areas on the rockwork!! I tried scrubbing them off and ended up at the doctors surgery with palytoxin poisoning!! ( not a nice experience in bed for 3 days )....

Unfortunately you will probably need to remove effected rock and bleach it or replace with new.. I would think anything you try to do to them in the tank such as scrubbing them, smothering them with Kalk or zapping them with a majano wand would potentially cause them to release toxins.

That is an awesome scape you have going there, so I know you are not going to like my advice. Any rock that has paly must go in the bin. Especially if it made you sick already.

I swear there is still living paly in the woods behind my house. It just won't die. IMO, 90% of it should not be in the hobby.

Thanks for your replies

Unfortunately I think you are right that is the only way of getting rid of them !! So it's off to the lfs to look at new live rock and start again !! Hopefully I can save most of my coral and it's a good excuse for a new rock scape!!!!
