Hello everyone,

I just recently purchased a condo and wanted to start on my saltwater tank adventure! The only problem is that I'm panicking on the thought that something could go wrong with the flooring due to everything I've been reading on the weight of tanks and joists etc etc. The tank size that I'm looking at would be anywhere from 70-110 gallons... probably not even thinking 120 ( plus sump ) . The location that I would want to put my tank, from the pictures I have below, would make the tank run parallel with the floor joists. Will I be fine with a tank under 120 gallons and I'm just freaking out or do I have a cause for concern? Our main floor is the 2nd but the tank would be on the 3rd floor. It seems the 1st floor joists run left to right but the 2nd floor joists run north & south.

I appreciate the help! :)

“Many tanks larger than 55 gallons and no more than 125 gallons will be okay, if they are placed in a good structural location and your floor framing is free from significant defects. ... If your tank is over 125 gallons, then it is likely that you should consider adding supports under your wood framed floor.”
Taken from a google search.

That construction you show below, if that’s what would be supporting your tank, it looks well done and solid to me.

Based on the pics of your proposed tank location and the flooring, if they did it correctly, the joists would be running perpendicular to the tank. You always want the flooring to be perpendicular to the joists do you have substrate to nail into. If so, you’re fine.
