I went into petco yesterday for the first time in months and apparently they're starting their saltwater section again but nationwide they're doing a reef "awareness" thing, not too sure exactly what it is, but they're now able to special order fish and coral's. I believe they're all aquacultured but I'm not 100% sure. Any thoughts from you guys on this?

I go to Petco to get my frozen food and I haven't seen anything about it at my local store, but it may be coming.

While I admire the thought of going aquacultured, I'm wary on the execution of the project. I wouldn't buy anything from the Petco near my house. JMO

hmm I saw the special order for fish at a petco in another town but not in the petco near me. The saltwater section looks much better at the one where you can special order but dont think I will. You can sometimes find nice healthy fish but I really think its going to depend on the store.

I will never support Petco. They are doing just fine without my business. They really have no business selling any live animals IMO. Support Local!!!!!

There's the good and the bad. With petco. Most of all ours in middle tennessee have saltwater and always able to order any FW/SW fish you want. I have them order clownfish to seahorse. Most or all there clowns come from SA and some from Ora. But 1 out of 3 keeps up with there tanks. The other 2 stores the fish look at me for help to save them. Lol

I ended up talking to guy for a while and they said they have like 10 wholesalers they use for fish and they had some LR curing but each rock had an individual tag on it, I'm not sure I even want to know how much they're charging for them. I do not give them any of my business, I always go to my LFS' but just the thought of Petco carrying coral kind of makes me shutter.

another thing I was told is that Petco doesn't use any chemicals to treat fish disease. I noticed they had a small blue tang with ich and the guy told me it's company policy that they don't use any chemicals and they just up the salt and heat.

not that im a huge supporter of petco but i must say that the one by my house isnt half bad.. the guys that work the saltwater are knowledgeable. if they see something even remotely wrong with a fish they wont sell it to you. were we live alot people have sw aquariums but the closest actual store is 45 min away, so they have expanded the sw dept. they have a 120g they keep live rock in ( if 2.99 a pound and sell boxes..) even seen acro frags. i still typically buy elsewhere but the petco where i live at least puts in an effort.....

The Petco by me has always had SW. One of the things Petco was planning to do was have frag tanks, but this won't be happening now. The test stores kept having people just take the corals out and put them in their pockets.

actually yours may never have frag tanks but i just got back from mine and was talking to one of the guys there and they are trying to another big tank to set up for that... they already have have frag racks just no dedicated tank yet, they had like 30+ frags there tonight and still waiting on an ora order.. had ricordias and montis there. they are all aquacultured, still hesitant on fish but i give them an A+ for thier corals

They may have racks and frags, but if corporate says no, its not going to happen...

they are actually looking to turn it in to a magnet store because of the type of orders they do and the amount they sell

One of the petco near me has a nice dedicated frag system. They actually have a nice selection of corals. They have ORA sps, chalice ricordias etc.

Petco near me has a frag tank. It looked ok for a while but not so much anymore. Over grown with hair algea and the corals look horrible. They did have a decent looking Acan at one time. Being curious I asked the worked how much it was. His response "Way to expensive." Turns out it was $50, great salesmanship.

well at least mine isnt the only putting effort.. i picked up a gorgeous acro at mine for $35

Mine is carrying frags as well, but corporate ran frag tanks in test stores and has decided that no other stores will be getting them due to the large number of frags that grew legs, lungs, and walked away.
