This tank is a 5g fluval tank and its been running for about a year now and the algae hasn't been a problem until a few months ago, do i need to do more frequent water changes? So far I've just been picking it all out as much as i can by hand.

This tank? Were you referring to a photo? With algae, its best to share a photo since there are so many kinds.

I found once I got my rodi unit my algae problem significantly reduced. With my small 5 gallon tank, I was able to get a neat little unit, inexpensive putting out zero tds. Might be an option if you don't have one
