Immediately after the freshwater dip, my triggerfish looked quite a bit better and was no longer laying on the bottom of the tank. His breathing has slowed down to normal as well. One day into treatment, he is looking like he might pull through.

His color is definitely getting darker and no more white spots, but he is still fighting hard to keep himself upright. Is this normal?

Velvet does a lot of damage, especially inside the gills. I've done everything by the book and sometimes I still lose the fish. Did you do the chemical bath following the FW dip?

I did not have access to any of the products listed for a chemical bath, but while I was at the LFS, a rep was in the store and recommended that I use Furan-3 in addition to cupramine. Will that be similar?

Sorry, it's Furan-2

Furan-2 contains 2 antibiotics, so it will only help if he has a secondary bacterial infection. Which many fish afflicted by velvet do develop, so its not a bad thing to dose into the water. :)
