Hey folks! Lately I've noticed two acro colonies in my tank looking a little unhappy on their undersides. I don't know whether this is related to shading, or it's a pest that I need to get on right away, or if it's just general weird unexplained acro stuff that happens from time to time.

I have over 50 colonies of acros, some up to about 6" across (but most small to medium sized), and only two are currently exhibiting this: a PC Rainbow, and a Teal Blue Stag. I clipped off a bit of each and took some pics, then did a Bayer treatment.

Granted, Bayer makes it hard to see stuff since it's cloudy, but I did not see any bugs come off these pieces or any leftover in the dip...

Can you all take a look at the pic below and let me know what you see? The sunny side of the corals are doing fine with good polyp extension and color.

other details: I run my Alk at 8.5 and about three weeks ago had a spike to about 10.5 or 11, and let it fall naturally over a few days (calcium reactor was reset too low for a bit after refilling). Normally I wouldn't worry about that but I did have a Blue Hoeksemai lose some tissue on one tip about 10 days later. I cut off the dead part and glued the cut and it's already encrusting over it.

Other than that, the only thing I can think of besides a pest is shading. Nitrates are 10 ppm and Phosphates 0.09 ppm (been fluctuating between .05 and .14 lately, and I am not using any GFO).

Maintenance/system details:
Water changes are 20% every 2 weeks with RC, temp is 79, ph between 8.1 and 8.3 daily. I run activated carbon and a 55w UV, system is 300g total. Lighting is LED/T5. I feed frozen mysis and spirulina brine to the fish twice a day, and add a few ounces of Red Sea Reef Energy A and B as well as acropower after feeding every morning. Twice a week I do reef roids at night.

Though picture is not clear, but I think I see AEFW bit marks on moth pieces...

If you dip with bayer in a clear deli container, you can look at it from the bottom to see if any pests are leftover (just be careful not to dump it on yourself). Otherwise, let everything settle for a minute, drain the container and refill with tap water to dilute the bayer so you can view from above. I've found a cheap magnifying glass from the drugstore is pretty useful for reefkeeping.

A closeup of the coral would be helpful, but it looks more like tissue recession to me, likely due to lack of light. It seems like the edges are fading, not sharp edges that you typically see with AEFW.

Awesome that's what i'm inclined to think. But I will try to get a better close up later this week.

Could be delayed reaction to the alk spike, or a shading issue. What LEDs, how many, and how many T5s?

The fixture is the 60” Giesemann Aurora which has 4 x 80w t5s, and 4 x 75 banks of LEDs. Then I have a 60” reefbrite XHO blu strip on the back, and a 50/50 strip on the front. A good bit of light, but about to add 3 XR15’s between the 4 LEDs...
