Hi guys, I looked through the forum for a similar problem but I did not find one. I was wondering if any of you could help me out. I've been having a problem with some sort of brown sometimes red (cyano) algae on my sand bed. It's been a month and things have not gotten better. I've read that this is some times normal and that it will go away but I'm worried that it has been a month and no signs of improvement. I have tried to touch the sand bed just to see how it feels and it feels like the sand has a thick crust on top of it, I could even remove parts of it and it all came in one piece! I don't know if this is normal or not but I'm worried about it. Here is my tank setup and information for you to look at, I have also attached pictures for you to see my sand.
Size: 125G
Age: 7 months
Started with Dry Rock from BRS
DSB: 4"
Water userd: RO/DI (tested my RO/DI unit and it still says 0 on its output)
Lights: DIY LED unit equivalent to a Radion Pro, runs from 8AM - 10PM, with its peak light from 12pm-8pm, max light output 40%
Nitrate/phosphate: 0 ppm (although I know this is due to the algae growing)
Sump/refugium: 20G, with Chaeto and some other algae (pic attached) with 3" sand bed plus 1" of miracle mud lit 24hrs a day
Phosban reactor
Skimmer: AcuaCEV 240 running 24hrs a day, I usually clean it every 3 or 4 days with a lot of dark green stuff.
Circulation pump: 2 tunze 6105 pumps running from 60%-90% during the day and 30%-45% during the night.
Apex controller keeping temp at 79F
Lots of copepods/amphipods on both the main display and sump
I bought from IPSF 4 months ago the following to keep biodiversity on my DSB: about 20 "Mama mia worms" , 12 bristle worms, 24 strombus snails, 24 nerite snails, 6 sand clams, 1 cucumber (which I've never seen LOL)
Calcium: 440
Alk: 8dkh
Mag: 1200
ATO with Kalkwasser
Other live stock: 1 Moorish idol, 1 yellow tang, 2 firefish, 2 yellow tail damsels, 1 flame angel, 1 royal gramma, 2 clowns, 1 spotted cardinal, 2 skunk shrimp, 3 brittle sea stars
