Put heater where??

Again new to this hobby... butnoticed on some videos that heater is in sump refrugium.... nowdo you size for tank or sump... if sump like I'm seeing who makes good smaller heaters...? In fresh I used a eheim jager but there seems to be a lot more decent brands/manufacturers out here now...

Size your heater for the entire system volume, as that's what it's going to be heating.

A lot of folks will buy two, each sized for half their system. That way, if one fails (on or off) disaster is slower in coming.

Eheim still makes good heaters. I'd recommend cobalt neo therm heaters

If you have a sump, definitely put the heater(s) there

I did for the total amount of water in the system. I got Aqueon Pro, and it's been going good for a year now.

Sump only with failsafe solution in case it gets stuck on... heaters can fail. I use my apex for that....

I have a JBJ true temp titianium heater. remote temp sensor. 3yrs and doing good.

First choice: Finnex Titanium Heater & External Finnex Heater Controller
Second choice for qt tanks, etc.: Aqueon Pro.

I prefer to put them anywhere they won't be visible. Preferably 2 heaters to get the job done, to help mitigate catastrophes as maritimer said.
As for brands, I suddenly care less.

Will kill the power to the heating side when temperature rises above set point.
So unless this guy fails, I'm indifferent to the heater so long as it fits, has good reviews and isn't glass.

I also got a Finnex controlled . I have 2 Heaters that will be controlled by Apex. Also remember not to put your hears next to your probes if you using probes with a controller. I would put the heater after the probes in different baffle in sump.

I have the inkbird dual stage controller. It has heating and cooling outputs to control both heaters and fans. I put my heaters in my sump ans temp sensor in my overflow box.

I'll add heaters are cheap enough that they should be like your serpentine belt and replaced every so often, even if it's still working. I have two heaters and plan to replace one of them every other year.
