QT torture

If one were to run the full line of medications durring qt what would they be? Are there certain ones you would use for every fish and others just in case you see issues?

The idea is to target specific diseases not put the fish through the cocktail hour of mixed medications. Ich and Marine Velvet are the most common diseases and Brooklynella is always suspected wild caught clownfish.

mrsaltwatertank I will take your advice (and others) and stick with QT longer then 4 days next time, and have the tank thoroughly cycled with no amn or nitrate.

Bought the fish from a local MTRC club member and pm'd him after a few days of the fish in QT , he assured we the fish was 'really healthy'. So I based my actions on a few variables. The LFS fish don't look so good to me either and I hear alot of 'ich' horror stories from them. But in the future I might buy from an online vendor which may or may not be worse then a LFS.

Guess what I was trying to find out from others is every ones threshold for the QT experience, and/or if everyone toughs it out with the stressed fish in QT for 4-8 weeks.

I haven't had issues with fish being constantly stressed out during my 30 days QT time. Even my clown tang which is a very active fish settled down well in QT and sailed through the whole experience without a problem.

Keep in mind that it has been scientifically proven that some fish can carry ich and never show symptoms. That means a fish that looks healthy might be carrying ich and you won't know it. This fact is often why fish that are healthy for a long time "suddenly" get sick when stressful events - tank move, new fish introduction to the tank, extended power outage, etc - pop up.

People blame the ich for "just randomly" showing up when in reality it was there all along. Sometimes the fish fight off the ich in the display tank which on one hand is good that the fish got better and on the other hand ich is definitely in the tank at that point and who knows when it will pop up again.

I do as jcdeng does. I trust NO ONE when it comes to fish. I QT everything now, even if it came from a fellow reefer or a highly-reputable online supplier. QT'ing a fish for 30 days is much less effort than dealing with a disease outbreak.

I usually do prazi on for 1 week, then 50% water change, cuprimine for 2 weeks, and then run carbon for 2 days to suck up all the med so the fish does not carry them into the DT.

I have prazi (for de-worming) and cuprimine (for parasites) on hand for the QT and fish, guess "I" got to stressed watching the tang in QT - LOL.

I also dip all new coral with coralrx , but not QT the coral.

main reason I QT coral is hitchhikers' eggs, those cannot be killed by dips, even iodine. I would dip them, put in the frag tank, and 2 months later dip again, then put into DT

Well the purple tang has been in the DT for almost two weeks and it is eating at the flake/pellet/mysis feedings and picking algae where it can. It had me worried for a week with the constant hugging the side glass swimming up and down constantly, but luckily it finally stopped that behaviour and is now swimming all around and hanging with the other easy going fish.

No ich and it's now less stressed I am happy to report.

I'll add that I bought this fish 'sight unseen', so I did not get to see the fish eat or swim around in it's 'home'.

Oh, I guess I may of QT too then.. as a rule I try to view a fish a few times in the tank before I buy it.. true you chance it gets purchased by someone else. But, I have mixed feelings on the qt thing.. I tend to feel that the qt process may be more stress on a fish than it may be worth.... IF you are really careful... now... I just added some mollies to my display refugium that I did not qt and am not very sure of so I may of screwed up.. and they are dalmatians so I will have to be looking really hard at them over the next several days. Some problems may be hard to see because of their broken up color patterns.

I did something similar a bit back with my Tomini tang, he was stressed at first in beginning showed a bit of ich for a day or two but him as well as all fish have been growing and nice and plump showing no signs of illness. So Idk if that beats the theory that many have that ich will NOT run its course and disappear. I'm no expert but I keep my fish well fed daily and defied the idea that green chromis die one by one until only one remains, my group has been happy and healthy, they and my two clowns are buddies the 5 of them.
