I posted this as a reply in another thread but no response I think I just got lost in the thread. Any how I read this I another site and maybe because I'm somewhat a newbie I have not heard of this method.

I read this in another forum anyone do this method what are your thoughts on this?

Because I was thinking if I go with 2 part dosing I would buy a doser pump put I read this method and wanted to know what reef2reef members thought

"I use two part in the following manner: My tank loses about 10 gallons of water per week due to evaporation. I have my top off water in two 5 gallon buckets and my top off pump pulls from both buckets (peristaltic pump that I got super cheap on ebay). I measure out a weeks worth of part 1 into one bucket and a weeks worth of part 2 into the other bucket. That way the two part is being dosed into the tank all day long as the tank is periodically topped off. This way you never forget to do it and since it is being added very slowly throughout the day you don't get any big white clouds."

At first glance there are a few drawbacks.

1) Your 2-part dosing rate is entirely dependent on the rate of evaporation. Since evaporation rates change throughout the day and throughout the year, your dosing rates will change with it.

2) If you remove water from your system for any other reason (acclimating new fish, selling frags), 2-part will be added. Not a huge deal, but not ideal.

3) If this system is using a single pump, the lines coming from each bucket will eventually be meeting. There is probably going to be some precipitation of calcium carbonate depending on the dose, flow rate, and the length of the output line. This is why reefers generally use dedicated pumps and lines, and sometimes even dose them at different times.

The problem there is consistency (it won't be).

Evaporation rates change, so your dosing won't be as constant or controllable as it may seem. It also offers you little in terms of adjustability.

It's a bad idea, reasons already stated above.

If you are going to use your top-off system, use the kalkwasser (lime water) method. I tried it, didn't like it, but some expert people swear by it.

I use 2 part. Initial set-up will cost you as you generally have to set up a reliable dosing system. But once running and you have your consumption rates stabilized, it is accurate to the point that you can maintain a specific number on your parameter easily.
